The airline celebrated a successful year of flights to Rotorua from Australia, at the occasion Mr. Cam Wallace, Air New Zealand general manager of Australia, declared 2010 to be a good year for flights in Australasia. He stated:
"Our focus now is on continuing to build demand to ensure longevity of service,"
The evolution of Rotorua as a new and rising tourist destination has opened a new door in the world of Australasia tourism. Marking the event, International Airport chief executive George White said the first year of the transtasman flights had exceeded the airport company's expectations.
Although the year has been more than ordinary for Air New Zealand, but the airline has not shared its detailed passenger statistic or overall route performance figures, citing commercial reasons. However New Zealand Customs figures show there has been 98 flights from Rotorua to Sydney and the same number arriving from Sydney to Rotorua. A total of 11,001 passengers arrived in Rotorua and 10,472 flew from Rotorua to Sydney, indicating the rise in demand and a successful beginning of flights to Rotorua.
Air New Zealand spokesperson also said the airline had received excellent support from the tourism industry in Australasia and the wider community in raising awareness of the new service on both sides of the Tasman.
Mr. Cam Wallace, Air New Zealand general manager of Australia added:
"I would like to thank them for their commitment. It has been outstanding and I was recently in Rotorua to discuss this with stakeholders."
