subject: The Benefits Of Portable Xray Equipment [print this page]

Every physician and health care professional worth his or her salt is dedicated to providing the best possible health care for patients, even when the limitations of America's health care system makes this difficult. One solution is a new twist on the old concept of house calls: when a patient is unable to come to the facility, a portable xray system allows the facility to come to the patient.

A portable xray system typically weighs less than one hundred pounds and can easily be interfaced with any laptop computer. By accessing a wireless hub, technicians and EMTs can transmit digital x-ray records from remote locations quickly and easily.

Portable xray equipment can make all the difference when it comes to patients who are not able to travel, particularly elderly patients who are homebound or confined to nursing homes or hospice facilities. It can allow the doctor to make diagnoses more quickly and accurately and to come up with appropriate treatments.

Of course, the implications for sports medicine, army field hospitals and even veterinarians who treat large animals are tremendous. Having portable x-ray equipment can easily mean the difference between life and death in the most extreme cases; as a treating and attending physician, you will not have to wait for access to an x-ray machine or for the time consuming process of developing traditional x-rays.

This cuts costs in eliminating the need for expensive ambulance services, since all digital x-rays can be loaded onto a laptop, which can then be taken to a nearby wireless hotspot and transmitted to the hospital securely over a wireless Web connection.

A portable xray system saves time as well. In the old days, a literal camera with actual film was required. The film would then have to be developed at considerable cost in terms of time and money using a dark room and expensive, potentially toxic developing chemicals. These x-ray images would then need to be physically delivered to the appropriate personnel. Of course, they also had to be stored in an actual room, where there was always the danger that they could be separated from other patient records.

Portable xray equipment eliminates these steps. These digital images can be transmitted anywhere, and when used in conjunction with an integrated PACS system, helps medical care professionals to remain compliant with patient privacy regulations as outlined by HIPPA.
