Social Anxiety The Fact Behind It

The term Social Anxiety refers to an emotional discomfort, worry, or fear of being in a social situation or social interactions with other people in avoidance of being judged or scrutinized by them. Such situation may include social functions such as meetings and parties, and even being in a public toilet, grocery stores, bus station, or anywhere where there are people around.

Being such a discomfort, social anxiety is part of the normal development of a person which starts from childhood and continues up to adulthood. Each of us undergoes such emotion one way or another. It can occur anywhere, anytime, and sometimes unexpectedly. So such emotion just come and eventually just goes away, depending on the person's coping capability so it completely depends on the person on how he or she can overcome her social anxiety.

In some cases, people can just deal with social anxiety very easily, while there are some also who are struggling in this type of emotion. These people dwell too much about such discomfort, worry, or fear intensely and find it very difficult to overcome their anxiety until it develops into something chronic - a social anxiety disorder or also known as social phobia.

Social phobia is an anxiety disorder which can disable an individual who is experiencing such condition. Disabling in a sense that, those who have this type of disorder may tend to avoid being anywhere where there are people around or interaction may be inevitable. So going to church, riding a bus, reciting in front of the class, or even using the public toilet are often avoided by those who have social phobia.

Being a chronic and disabling condition, social anxiety disorder is treatable. There are means of overcoming social anxiety disorder or social phobia which can be in a form of psychotherapy. Common example of such therapy is called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and other forms of brain wave therapy, specialized for different types of anxiety disorders.
