subject: Mobile Market Monitor: Games Q2 2009 [print this page] Apple's iPhone and App Store continue to have a significant impact on the mobile games industry and the major publishers. Market leader EA Mobile and second placed Gameloft both reported year-on-year growth in Q2 2009, driven largely by impressive results from their range of games for the iPhone and iPod Touch. EA Mobile remained the world leading mobile games publisher with record revenues of $50m in the quarter, while Gameloft posted sales of $38.6m. Third placed Glu Mobile reported Q2 2009 revenues of $19.9m, above its initial forecast but 16 per cent down on 2008.
The application store trend continued at pace in Q2, with new stores announced or launched from leading device manufacturers, mobile network operators and third party distributors. New releases from major mobile games publishers and developers also show the impact of new distribution channels, a stronger emphasis on games based on original intellectual property (IP) underlines how developers are taking advantage of the ease of publishing games outside of network operators' portals.
