To Rhinoplasty or to not Rhinoplasty?
To Rhinoplasty or to not Rhinoplasty?

What exactly is a rhinoplasty? It is a surgical procedure, commonly called a nose job.Though it can be done for aesthetic reasons, it can also correct trauma, birth defects or breathing problems. In many aesthetic cases, Rhinoplasty is combined with other facial surgical procedures, such as chin augmentation.

Though Rhinoplasty is considered a relatively safe surgical procedure, complications may still arise. One of which is post operative bleeding. This relatively uncommon and if happens often resolves itself without needed treatment.Another health risk is infection.Occasionally, an infection can progress to an abscess and if that is the case, it requires a surgical drain. In some cases, scars, also known as adhesions, will form to bridge across the nasal cavity. When this occurs, it will cause nasal obstruction and make it hard to breather. In most cases, this will need to be cut away.Another complication to this surgery is septal perforation. This basically means that there is a while that was make during your surgery in the septum and it can cause things like chronic nose bleeding, crusting, difficulty breathing, and a whistling sound when breathing.Taking out too much cartilage is also a complication that may occur.Think Michael Jackson. Some of the deformities that can occur from taking out too much cartilage is "polly beak" and "saddle nose" deformities.A polly beak deformity is when they take too much cartilage and because of that there is too much skin on the nose.A saddle nose deformity is when the nose kind of sinks in to the face because the septum cannot hold up the nose. There is also the pig like nose, which is when the nose is over rotated and the nostrils are too visible, kind of like a pig nose.

Keep in mind that these are the extreme cases and that for a majority of the time, the surgery goes smoothly. In most cases, the doctor will prescribe some antibiotics and pain medicine. Most people are recovering for about a week and then the external cast is removed.Sometimes, internal stents are used and if so they will usually be removed at four days to two weeks after surgery. Also note that there will be bruising called periorbital bruising, this normally lasts for about two weeks.

Within the world of Rhinoplasty there are several procedures and types. For example, there are two surgical approaches: open vs. closed. In closed rhinoplasty, incisions are made inside the nostrils. In open rhinoplasty, there is another incision that is made across the columella. It is important to go over all of the benefits and health risks of getting a rhinoplasty with your doctor. Some people may see a mazillofacial surgeon, otolaryngologist or a plastic surgeon to get a rhinoplasty done.It is important to do your research when making this decision because this is your face. You don't want to have any of the health problems discussed earlier to happen to you.So what do you think about the cosmetic surgery rhinoplasty? To rhinoplasty or to not rhinoplasty?
