Now, in all fairness, if you sit through all 94 episodes of the hit TV series Sex and the City, you will see a fair number of women's scarves and shawls adorning the necks, not only of our four favorite heroines, but also those of many of the minor characters and extras, although it is debatable as to just how many of these are made from silk. There are though, some very good reasons as to why each of Miranda, Charlotte, Samantha and, of course, our beloved Carrie, really should have invested in a fabulous collection of hand painted silk scarves and hand dyed shawls, so let's look at each of our girls in turn.
Miranda
Now, although Miranda did finally make partner at the law firm where she worked, it has to be said that she might have got there sooner if only she had smartened up her act a bit. Of course, Miranda is the brains out of all four characters and certainly the least style conscious, but nevertheless she could have done with a little help. There were episodes in which she wore neck scarves, but these did little more than make her look like an air stewardess. A few long, flowing, hand painted silk scarves would have added much to her look in terms of elegance and sophistication, especially in view of her obvious love of bright colors.
Charlotte
Ah, dear Charlotte, the romantic. Actually, Charlotte's dress sense was always pretty amazing and she certainly knew how to make the best of herself. By her own admission though, she hated her thighs, and in the shots where she was seen in just her underwear she could probably have been doing with a bit of balancing out. A gorgeous silk scarf tied underneath her bust to create an empire line would have worked magnificently and silk would definitely have been fitting for a lady of Charlotte's breeding.
Samantha
While it is tempting to suggest that Samantha could well have made use of more than one silk scarf in the bedroom, she might have been better disposed to wear them with some of her more flamboyant outfits to hide a little of her cleavage. Although she claimed to be immune to the love bug, of course this turned out not to be entirely true when Richard came on the scene. Who knows, maybe with a little more class and a tad more decorum, she might have been able to keep him.
Carrie
Last, but by no means least, there's Carrie, the real style guru, and boy did she occasionally put some zany outfits together. Carrie though, always seemed to manage to get away with combinations of clothes that none of the rest of us would ever dare try. She did actually seem to be quite a fan of scarves and shawls, but if you're going to be around someone as stylish and classy as Mr Big, only 100% pure silk hand painted scarves and shawls will do!
