Well its that time of year again and things to do in the garden, you will find here a few simple tips to be getting on with but there are so many things you need to get done, quite a task for those of you with the bigger gardens.
The month of October is often a good time for painting your fence and trellis, get yourself a good sprayer from your local diy shop as if you have a very big fence to paint these sprayers can save you a huge amount of time, hours in fact, a brush simply wont do the job anymore when you can use a cheap sprayer, and the time spent could be used somewhere else in the garden.
If you have any fruit growing, you can keep picking them until they just stop ripening.
Aerate your lawn and brush sharp sand into spiked holes, this is also about your last chance to give your lawn an autumn feed, dont forget, keep on mowing but raise them blades a little.
Dont waste those fallen leaves you have racked up, get them on the compost heap.
Keep picking the ehads of your roses if you have any as they can actually flower until Christmas time, this is another nice thing about roses as they are quite hardy.
Now is also a good time to think about planting your shrubs and perennials, roses, trees and conifers and plant your spring flowering plants such as wallflowers and pansies etc and bring in any dahlia tubers but carry on with any shrub cuttings.
It is also a good time for dividing your hardy perennials.
It is a good time now to be planting your spring cabbage but do remember to cover them with a net unless you really want to feed the pigeons, also plant your autumn onion sets and garlic.
Due to the coming frost this time of year, you may as well dig up any remaining potatoes.
An obvious tip that so many of us forget about is to put a little grease of some kind on any rubber bands you have on your trees.
If you have any tender plants they are not going to last very long if left out so bring them into the greenhouse.
This is a good time to give the glass in your greehouse a good clean ready for the following spring, that will be the last thing you want to think about.
Lining your greenhouse with bubble polythene will help you to conserve some heat for the winter months.
Dont wait until you actually need to use your heaters to find out they dont work, check them now.
Dont do quite so much watering now and only do it during the morning hours, and also remember those odd warm days when you might have to open your ventilators.
Throw out any summer bedding plants when they have finished flowering.
There are an endless list of things to do in the garden and the jobs to do never seem to end.
I asked a recently retired friend if he is bored now he has retired and he said he spends so much time doing things in the garden that need doing, he cant believe he ever had time to even go to work.
