Since they were puppies, Gido and Mochi (our shiba inus) could always pull out of their dog collar. Because of this, my husband and I were more at ease with dog harnesses since the escape trait is common for Shibas. The dog harness is awesome and beneficial for the overall comfort of your Pooch, we also wanted to train Gido and Mochi to wear collars (plus with so many designer dog collars in the market today, there were endless options).
In our mission in finding the best of the best for our 2 shibas, we came across the Martingale collar. The concept and operational function of a Martingale collar is similar to a choker collar, but the effects are exponentially humane.
The martingale dog collar remains loose when no tension is placed on the collar, but when your dog starts to pull, or if you need to exert corrective action, the collar tighens gently. When used correctly, a Martingale collar is very effective.
Standard martingale collars are lined with nylon webbing, durable cloth, or satin for extreme comfort, and are conducive for daily use and wear. For an added level of comfort and safety, Martingale collars tend to be wider than standard collars. Two and three inch widths are not uncommon, and due to the simplicity of the Martingale collar, different fabrics and hardware are often used for a truly fashionable, yet realistic and practical statement.
Martingale collars have been around for a long time and have been very common with Pooch lovers of Whippets, Greyhounds, and similar breeds that have long, elongated necks and thin heads. The benefits in comfort were only realized recently with other dog breeds, and Martingale collars are rapidly growing in popularity with dogs of all shapes and sizes.
To ensure proper fit for your dog, the Martingale collar should be loose enough to slip over your dog's head. Once it is on, adjust the collar so that it is snug around the widest part of your dog's head. To determine the widest part of your dog's head, the collar should fit snugly when placed directly behind your dog's ear and just past the jowls. When sized properly, the end rings should never be allowed to touch.
