Tolerance to Pre Workout Supplements
Tolerance to Pre Workout Supplements

Prolonged exposure to any foreign substance will cause the body to build what is known as a tolerance'. Tolerance is defined as resisting the action of a drug or substance. Once a tolerance begins to develop, the desired effects of the substance decrease. The longer a substance is used, the more severe the tolerance. When it comes to pre workout supplement use, users tend to increase their dose since they start to lose desired effects. This is a natural reaction because by increasing the dose, a user will once again experience the desired effects. As long as the dose is being increased, the body will not develop a tolerance to pre workout supplements.

Just because the desired effects are no longer experienced by the user, does not mean the substance no longer has an effect on the body. Since most tolerance to pre workout supplements come from stimulant based ingredients and stimulants are particularly hard on the body, there can be negative effects with prolonged / increasing usage. So in order to reap the benefits of pre workout supplements while not simultaneously putting the body under excessive stress, a user should practice what is known as cycling.'

The effects (both positive and negative) are not necessarily the same for all pre workout supplements. Not all of these pre workout supplements have the same ingredients so the effects are diverse. Pre workout supplements contain at least one or all of the following ingredients:

Caffeine -

Caffeine is a psychoactive stimulant. Caffeine stimulates the nervous system. It is commonly found in energy drinks, coffee, and chocolate. It is used to fight off morning drowsiness, decrease mid day fatigue and raise alertness. These effects usually last for about two to three hours. Factors such as the users' weight can influence the duration and intensity of the effects.

Nitric Oxide -

Nitric Oxide is used pharmaceutically to slowly decrease the rate at which the heart beats. This occurs by dilation of the veins. When the veins are dilated there is less blood being returned to the. Nitric Oxides significance to pre workout supplements is that it gives the user what is known as a pump.' This pump typically makes the user's muscles look swollen for a couple hours intra and post workout.

Ginseng -

Ginseng is the root from the Panax Ginseng plant. It is traditionally used in China and Korea to enhance libido and promote successful copulatory performance. In modern day U.S. Ginseng is commonly found in energy drinks and herbal teas. It is one of the most popular herbal supplements. It is thought to drastically improve memory, neurological function and mood. It has also been believed to rejuvenate, revitalize and even reverse the signs of aging.

A few others common substances found in pre workout substances are taurine, creatine ethyl ester, glycocyamine, biotin and rosea root extract.

When tolerance begins to develop, you should avoid increasing your dosage. The best way to combat the buildup of tolerance is to prevent it from every occurring in the first place. The most popular practice is known as "cycling." A majority of fitness enthusiasts practice cycling to prevent tolerance to pre workout supplements. Cycling is when you use a pre workout supplement referred to as the "primary pre workout supplement" in conjunction with a "secondary pre workout supplement." Typically, a user will alternate the two over an extended period of time. Each supplement is taken for the duration of about four weeks before alternating to the next. Since pre workout supplements do not contain the same ingredients, this practice prevents the body from building up a tolerance to pre workout supplements.
