Should You Take More EPA Fish Oil Than DHA?

There has long been a debate about which of the omega 3 fatty acids are more beneficial. So should you take more EPA fish oil or opt for ones rich in DHA instead?

Quite simply, you should always go for more DHA!

All the recent research shows that while EPA is important, it is the DHA fats which provide most of the benefits. Here are two examples of why that is.

Scientists from Britain and America have recently discovered that the DHA fatty acids are converted into Resolvin D2, a powerful anti-inflammatory and the reason why oils from fatty fish are so beneficial for your health.

Most diseases are caused by inflammation and in the body this is known as the silent killer, leading to sudden death from premature heart attacks and strokes. Taking a quality DHA oil can reduce your risk of sudden death by up to 40%.

The human brain is made up of around 60% fats and over half of these are DHA, so it is no wonder they are often called brain food!

They help to nourish the cells in the brain and keep the membranes healthy, reducing the risk of depression and anxiety and according to recent research they can help to prevent more severe degenerative neurological diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's too.

So how much DHA should you take each day?

The optimal amount for adults is between 500-600mg a day. This equates to 2 capsules a day with a minimum of 250mg of DHA in each.

You should look to get around half that amount of EPA although that is no easy task. Almost all oils today contain a lot more EPA, partly because they are behind on research and partly because it is easier to source and cheaper to use.

By checking the website or bottle label carefully, you should be able to see the individual levels to help you make the right choice.

Finally regarding price, a more expensive product does not guarantee you more benefits, in fact the opposite is true. A quality DHA oil can be had for around $18-$20 a month but I have seen many costing much more than this and containing very small amounts of omega 3, especially DHA.

Now you know that more EPA fish oil is not the answer, look for the ones rich in DHA to provide the important health benefits and help you to maintain optimal health now and in the future too.
