subject: Ipod Nano Displays A Sad Face Icon [print this page]

Apple Inc. introduced iPod nano in 2005, and ever since then it has become an increasingly popular portable media player. The iPod nano is currently into it's 5th generation. Although features of the iPod change with every generation, some of it's errors are common to each generation. As experienced by many iPod users, one encounters numerous errors while using an iPod. One of the most common errors is the 'sad face icon' that appears on the iPod screen. This is the sign that your iPod has encountered a malfunction. The sad face icon indicates Hardware problems.

For example, When you connect your iPod to the computer to transfer music, it displays a 'sad face icon' or a 'sad ipod icon'. This is accompanied by either or both the following:

iTunes does not recognize the iPod

iPod is not found in 'My Computer' (in Windows) and Finder (in Mac)

Cause:

The 'sad face icon' is the iPod's way of communicating with the user. It appears in any of the following situations:

Either the iPod or iTunes may be corrupt-this could be due to a number of reasons.

The system you are using does not meet iPod's minimum system requirements-The iPod may not be compatible with the OS installed in the computer it is connected to.

the iPod is not properly connected to the computer-The iPod should be connected properly using the right type of USB cable.

Solution:

Try to force the iPod into Disk Mode, if this works, it means that there was no hardware problem and you just need to restore the iPod. Once you restore the iPod you can use an iPod recovery software to recover the songs on the iPod. The software runs while the iPod is connected to the system and then recovers iPod files from the iPod hard drive. If it is a hardware problem (in which case the above method will not work) one must take it to an Apple store or iPod service center.

Stellar Phoenix iPod Recovery, enables you to recover deleted iPod files whether deleted due to human error or some technical mal-function. The software, developed by Stellar Information Systems Ltd., has a user friendly GUI thus enabling users to recover data themselves rather than running to professionals. The software is available for both Mac and Windows operating systems. It supports a variety of file formats like JPEG, GIF, WAV, BMP, MP3, MP4 etc.
