subject: Tips On Mowing The Lawn [print this page]

Its a bright sunny day and looking outside the window you see the monstrosity that is your front lawn. How many years have you been trying to mow it right but its still uneven and grown in certain places more than others. Then there are the dead patches and mounds or little hills where the ground settled or shaped itself after constant mowing along the same lines.

Dont fret as this happens to many people over the years. If the lawn isnt beyond help or if youre planning to reseed and start anew here are a few tips to keep in mind when you are trying to regenerate your once lush grass:

Check to make sure the lawn is clear of debris that could ruin the lawnmower, the blade, or the grass if the mower runs it over.

Dont mow in the afternoon when the sun is at its peak, as it puts stress on the grass. A good time to mow the lawn is towards evening.

Dont mow when the lawn is wet or moist.

Each time mow in a different direction so the same grassy area isnt continuously being affected by the lawnmowers wheels. Doing so will prevent unwanted patterns, which may evolve over time.

Height: Avoid cutting more than one third of the blade of grass at a time. If the lawn grew tremendously since the last mowing cut one third, wait a few days, and cut again. When unsure lean toward leaving more than less.

Dont mow short: Mowing lawns short makes them unhealthy. They could loose their versatility and fail to once again become robust. Taller means more shade and stronger root systems, which generally wont let weeds them take over.

Lawnmower maintenance: A sharp lawnmower blade makes a good cut and keeps grass healthier.

Mow in long straight lines, not in circles or zigzag.

The clean up: depending on the type of grass you could either leave the clippings in place letting them fall to the ground to decay. Others may not and its a good idea to check which type.

If youre using a gasoline mower dont refuel on the lawn as a spill could occur contaminating the soil.

Good luck and enjoy the best part, the smell of fresh cut grass.
