Since alcohol, movies, and night clubs have been banned in Riyadh, you would think that there is not much nightlife to be enjoyed in the city. Most of the locals and Riyadh hotel staff members will tell you that you will have to travel outside the city into the surrounding areas if an active nightlife what you are hoping to enjoy. Ironically, the expats manage a rather lively and rich social life, which can typically found in one of their private compounds or within the embassy area. These are typically more private parties, but the "illegal" booze is ever-flowing.
Beware of what the Saudis refer to as Saudi Champagne which, in reality, is non-alcoholic and a mixture of apple juice and Sprite. The following are the two primary nightlife venues in Riyadh:
The Globe - Considered the most hip caf/restaurant in Riyadh, the establishment is situated in a large glass ball that is suspended 240 metres (787.4 feet) above the city, and is recognised as the best place in town to splurge and have fun. The atmosphere is dimly lit and very relaxing, so you can recline in a comfy leather seat while enjoying some Saudi Champagne (see above description).
Scoler Express - One of Riyadh's six different alley cafs, this is the only one of the bunch that is not part of a chain of establishments. The menu features an excellent espresso as well as a number of cold or hot beverages that you can enjoy in an outdoor seating area that is cooled down by an excellent mister system.
