subject: Cell Phone Tracer For Free [print this page]

So, you want to know not just who it was that called you, but exactly where that person is calling from? You are assuming that someone called you from a cell phone and want to know where they are located right now. If you can get that information for free, hey, that's an even sweet deal. I mean why not? With the Great Recession biting off more and more of the economy and more and more people unable to meet their basic expenses, we really don't want to waste money we don't have to. We want a cell phone tracer for free.

Well I didn't quite find a service like that for free, but I did find a really cool service which is very low cost. Endgadget recently reviewed a new service called World Tracker. The service allows you to punch in a phone number and you can then find out where that person is in the world, using GPS technology. Talk about Big Brother watching.

The service is similar to many services available in the United States which are primarily intended to be used by parents and pet owners in order to track the location of their loved ones. Before they gave up on the service, the Disney Mobile telephone service offered a service like for free with their phones. While it wasn't quite a cell phone tracer for free, it was pretty close.

The service from World Tracker currently works only with O2, Vodafone, Orange and T-Mobile in the United Kingdom. However, they do have plans on offering the service in other countries as well, including the United States. One has to wonder however if they will manage to expand the service. While we are constantly losing our anonymity to an ever increasing array of services that can out us as exactly who and what we are, this service just smacks of invasion of privacy and would likely be a prime target for a suit by the American Civil Liberties Union.

The next step of course would be for a cell phone tracer service for free to actually arrive on the marketplace. I imagine it would be supported by advertising, but I for one would not want to see such a service around. It would make me profoundly uncomfortable to know that I could be traced by anyone with an Internet connection and a penchant for snooping on others.
