Expect Style and Function in Every Piece of Modernist Furniture

Many are not aware that most of those used to furnish houses today are modernist furniture. Like most furniture items sold in stores these days, modernist furniture are both visually interesting and very functional.

Modernist furniture have two distinct characteristics. First, it is highly functional. Functionality is important because in the first place, consumers purchase them to be used. Beds are to be used for sleeping, just like chairs are to be utilized for sitting. In fact, the modern style made furniture much useful for people that time. For instance, most pieces serve double duty, the second of which is storage. Sofas or chairs are not only for sitting now, but also as storage for books or other items as well. As a result, there is less clutter and more space for homeowners.

Second, modernist furniture is aesthetically pleasing enough to be displayed. Not only are modernist furniture extremely useful, they are also nice to look at. These pieces of furniture are a departure from the more intricate style of furniture design that preceded. Instead of rich ornaments, carvings and elaborate patterns, the pieces became a testament to simplicity and geometry.

Modernist furniture is best known for its signature clean lines and the cutting-edge materials used in furniture production. The modern style in furniture design is defined by a streamlined look and the presence of sculptural elements. Designers such as Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen were two of the most notable names associated with the style. As for materials, those which were used were not originally utilized for furniture: fiberglass, Lucite, Bakelite and plastic.

While simple is a major characteristic of this kind of furniture, this characteristic should not be taken to mean the same thing as plain. Modernist furniture is available in striking colors, such as yellow and red.
