Everyone has their own insecurities and excessive chest fat can be especially stigmatizing for men. Growing up I was the fat kid in my grade. I remember the teasing and low self-esteem that came from being overweight and not very athletic from such an early age. Those memories can stick with people years down the road and really do some damage on your self-confidence. Fortunately for me, at the age of 19 I promised myself that I'd make a change and would stop making excuses. I ended up losing 35 pounds and achieving fitness goals I had once only dreamed of accomplishing. Here are the 3 keys to my success.
1. Any Exercise is Good Exercise The most valuable lesson I learned when I decided to make a change in my physical health was that I had no reason to feel intimidated of people in better shape than me. Everyone who works out is taking their personal fitness to the highest level it can go, that's why it works (obviously). If a soccer player runs 5 miles one week, he will eventually have to run 5.25 miles to continue improving in his personal fitness. The same goes for people who haven't exercised in years. Do as many jumping jacks, push ups and laps around the track as you can -as long as you push yourself to your own limit, you are on the path to success.
One more thing about pushups - when I started trying to lose my man boobs I couldn't even do 10 pushups, now my personal best is 87! It's all about improvement and targeting the area you want to change. Naturally, you want to focus on your upper body with exercises like push ups, pull ups, and shoulders -all of which help your pectoral muscles lift and flatten that chest!
2. Water > Any other Drink
When people are discouraged with their weight, they often (and wrongly) attribute it solely to what they are eating. Obviously if you live on cheeseburgers and potato chips, you're going to be struggling with your weight - but very often people can lose substantial weight by simply switching water for soft drinks. Water has no calories and tons of nourishment, it is what our body craves. Keep the fluids you ingest nourishing - I drink one glass of soymilk in the morning and water for the rest of the day and that plan has worked for me.
3. Find Support
There is no way I would have accomplished my fitness goals if I didn't have the motivation and guidance of peers who have been through the exact same things. Undertaking dramatic and life changing weight loss entails a lot of determination, but others help to you to keep improving and stay on the ball in a way that self-motivation simply cannot. When you see the results of others - a flat and toned upper body- you want it for yourself more, and you also want to inspire others to do the same. Fitness is infectious, remember that!
These three keys have worked for me over the years and there's no reason I would deviate from them. I assure you that if you diligently follow them, getting rid of those man boobs will be a breeze!
