subject: The Way To Light Your Rooms Has Changed [print this page] The way to light the rooms in your home has changed a lot over the years. We will look at how it used to be done and get some ideas of how it is done today.
How it used to be done
When electricity was first invented and it started taking over from candles, it was one bulb hanging from an electrical cord in the middle of the room. I can actually remember the first time we had electricity in our home. I was only a little kid but I remember the excitement of just flicking a switch and seeing light.
Over the years, funnily enough, little has changed. When a new house is built, there is still a light hanging from the ceiling. Other aspects changed though. Two switches allowed a light to be turned on or off when entering or leaving a room from different doors. It became possible to have a light at a different brightness to suit a different situation.
You may want it very bright in the kitchen to see help doing the cooking or in the dining room to see what the family is eating. However, for a small romntic dinner for two, dimmed lighting is normally preferred.
Some ideas for modern lighting
In today's world people wanted a lot more flexibility in the way that they illuminate their rooms. Instead of the old fashioned way, it is possible to have wall lights around a room. These can either be sticking out from the wall or even recessed into it. It is not easy to add that to a room though and should be planned in advance.
Tall floor lamps, often called standard lamps are another possibility to consider. One or more can be put in a corner, they do not use up very much space and can be moved around easily if required. Of course, you will need a plug socket close to where you want to move it to.
An even more flexible option is table lamps. They are smaller than standard lamps so can be moved around even more easily. You can change the color of the shades if you change the decor of the room or even to fit your moods.
As you can see, there a lot more choices now than there used to be and, if the situation is right, you can even revert back and have a nice candlelight meal for two.
