Licorice Root Benefits

Licorice root is known by many names including gan zao and sweet root. However, licorice root benefitsinclude possiblyalleviating ailments such as bronchitis, sore throat and ulcers. It is also used to treat infections that come from viruses like hepatitis. It contains a compound called glycyrrhizin, but this compound can be removed to create a substance called DGL, also known as deglycyrrhizinated licorice.

You can get supplements in the form of licorice root capsules, liquid extracts and tablets. Dried and powdered substances from peeled licorice are also options. You may even prefer licorice root tea. The injectable form of licorice extract is not available in the United States, but this was the form used in clinical trials that actually showed some beneficial effects on hepatitis C. However, there is still no scientific data for any other benefits.

There is some suggestion that you need to be cautious of licorice that still contains glycyrrhizin. Large amounts of this supplement containing the compound are believed to cause high blood pressure, low potassium levels and salt and water retention. Furthermore, it can affect the hormone levels of cortisol and drugs related to steroids like prednisone. You should also be cautious when using the supplement in conjunction with medications that lower the body's potassium levels. It is recommended that pregnant women not consume licorice in large amounts in any form while those suffering from heart disease or high blood pressure take caution if using the supplement.

There is no recommended dosage for this supplement, so you need to consult with your health care practitioner if you are interested in using it. You may also look into DGL products to decrease the risk of the side effects that come with glycyrrhizin. Furthermore, you need to find out how long you can safely use the supplement since the effects of using licorice for more than six weeks is unknown.
