Winter's Bone is not an easy film to be loved. Directed by Debra Granik has a running time of 1 hour and forty minutes. The film stars Jennifer Lawrence, John Hawkes, Lauren Sweetser, Kevin Breznahan, Ashlee Thompson, and Isaiah Stone and it is a drama.
The film won the Grand Jury award for best drama and screenwriting at Sundance Film Festival and got 92 per cent of the positive reaction from the film critics.
Winter's Bone is the story of a girl Ree (Jennifer Lawrence) who has more than her share of difficulties even before the plot is reveled. She has a mother who is close to catatonic and her father cooks methamphetamine for living. Ree, on the other hand, is more responsible in the family also tutoring her younger siblings.
The situation becomes difficult when the local sheriff informs Ree that her dad skipped out on bail and disappeared. He has put the family house up as security. So Ree has to find her dad within a week otherwise the bail company will take the house.
Made with a low budget of $2 million, the story is a human drama and depicts the culture and lifestyle of small group of people living in the rural Ozark Mountains of south Missouri. The positive reaction towards the film means that despite the big banner films, there is still room for human drama and low budget cinema.
