The Nigerian Graduate and Availability of Good Jobs

That the average Nigerian graduate goes through thick and thin to get a job after rounding off from school is saying the obvious. It is an established fact that the Nigeria government is not doing enough to create jobs. There is little or no room for private sector to grow; if they do not grow they will not need to employ more manpower than they presently have.

The government needs to create that enabling environment to encourage the private sector to grow. This growth will ultimately translate to room for employment. We all saw how busy the banks got when there was a government policy to help them. With recapitalization, all the banks get revved up and expanded. Those that could not stand on their own merge with others to create mega financial houses, like having best of both worlds. This expansion lead to thousands of Nigeria graduates getting employment. This article is not to examine what and why of the recapitalization policy, but to show that with the right mindset and strong will jobs can be created.

The government primary role is not to be an employer of labour. In developed nations and nations that are moving ahead, private sector is given all the room and encouragement to grow. They can therefore account for employing 70% of the total workforce. That is while it is mind boggling to hear state governments complains that they spend over 80% of their monthly expenditure on paying workers salary.

In a nutshell, the government needs to do more. We can live almost all the blames for this present quagmire on the doorstep of the government. What have they done in the past decade to encourage growth in the economy? How many private companies have they assisted by way of loan and good operational environment?

The environment for local industries to thrive in Nigeria is virtually non-existent. With the epileptic power supply, the fluctuation and inflation of the Naira leading to higher cost for raw materials, the bad roads which add to operational cost, it is safe to say that doing business is not conducive.

With many companies who have left the shores of the country and new ones not coming, it is safe to say that there are no jobs in the country. The Federal Civil Service plans to create 15000 jobs in 5 years. It is a mad house out there. The few jobs available are very competitive to get, you must be qualified or well connected to get them.
