COLIN Montgomerie says he would love the Ryder Cup battle with the USA to be a 30-man team event - to prove the European Tour's strength in depth.

The Europe captain was thrilled by Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell's US Open triumph when he beat Gregory Havret of France to the title at Pebble Beach.

Monty fired off a text to congratulate McDowell that read: "Brilliant - the whole Tour salutes you."

And the Scot is more confident than ever that he'll lead his 12 players to victory in Wales.

He said: "I wish it was 30 against 30 when we go to Celtic Manor and that would show the real strength and depth of our European Tour.

"It was just a fabulous week for all concerned - not only with Graeme winning but also let's not forget Gregory Havret could have won the championship. He really came out of the week very well.

"But then Graeme has always been a very determined player and I am delighted for him. It's a great success for Europe and that can only take him forward.

"He's obviously made the European team so he's well and truly in the side and that's fantastic.

"With Phil Mickelson having won at Augusta and now Graeme winning the US Open, I guess it squares the ledger this year as regards the Majors.

"Lee Westwood nearly won at Augusta and it was just that Phil played better.

"But European golfers are there or thereabouts every time and I expect the same thing to happen next month at St Andrews."

McDowell's victory was the third consecutive triumph for Europeans on this year's US Tour and the 12th success from 26 events in season 2010 won by a European or non-American player.

Monty said: "It's just been amazing. I can't recall a US Tour season where so many non-Americans have won. We had Lee winning in Memphis and Justin the week before at the Memorial.

"It's amazing what's happening and it's making my job as Ryder Cup captain that much harder - but in a very positive way.

The Ulsterman saw off stiff competition from Gregory Havret of France and South Africa's Ernie Els to win the Major tournament by one shot, despite posting a scratchy final round of three over par. Speaking after his dramatic victory, McDowell revealed he was looking forward to celebrating his success at Pebble Beach.

"A few pints of Guinness will probably go down around now," he remarked.

McDowell has previously predicted that Europe will have the edge over their opponents from across the Atlantic when they clash in Newport in the coming months.

"I really think this is the place we will win the Ryder Cup right back," he said.
