Drug Formulation and drug efficacy

Drug formulation is a process in which the active drug as well as other different drugs are brought together to manufacture a single medicinal product. It is a process of drug development which both acceptable as well as stable for the patient to consume. It is essentially a process of building drug efficacy, which will show fast results to the patient.

It is the process of brining together of factors such as the pH, molecule size, polymorphism and solubility and can change the activity as well as the bioavailability of the drug. To avoid any problems, drug formulation also entails the checking of any kind of undesirable reactions between the container and the preparation during the process of drug development.

Purpose of Drug formulation

A drug formulation can be done for various reasons such as to achieve high levels of efficiency, to achieve the effects, which are not possible with single components.

Types of Drug Formulation

Drug formulation is of two types:

1) Oral formulations and

2) Topical medication form

Oral formulations: This is the process of formulating drugs in the capsule or tablet form. Drug formulation in a tablet mostly comprises of 5-10% of the active drug, 10% of compounds, which will speed up the process of disaggregation and disintegration of the tablet in the stomach and 80% of the lubricants, binders, glidants, fillers, disintegrants and lubricants. In tablets, additional ingredients are used to prevent any stomach problems. In a capsule, the active drug is enclosed in a gelatinous envelope.

Topical medication form: This includes formulation of drugs to obtain various products such as ointments, creams, gels, pastes and even powder.

Adhesives, paints, inks, cosmetics, detergents and pharmaceuticals are some of the areas where drug formulation is carried on a large scale to produce desired results.
