When I was a kid back before all the high tech electronic equipment of today back when there were only 13 channels on the tv and everybody actually walked over to the tv set to change channels. That was sometime in the 70s. One Year I got a tape recorder for a present. I had an idea of how my voice sounded, but I recorded myself on the tape recorder and played it back. Strangely enough my voice sounded completely different than how I perceived how my voice sounded.
I'm sure you're asking what the heck does that have to do with dieting. 70's electronics don't really have anything to do with dieting but how you perceive what you eat does have something to do with dieting. I know that I always thought my diet was very healthy. I try to eat healthy. I try not to overeat, but unless I really watch what I eat I don't realize I'm doing anything wrong.
How do you go about keeping a diet diary. First of all take some time after your last meal every day, or just keep track while you are having your meals. Write down what you eat and approximately how much. You don't have to weigh it, just an approximate amount, how much of your plate it takes up or some other way to measure. Do this sometime each day of the week or after each meal. Oh, don't forget the snacks and condiments too. You really need to keep track of those.
After the week is up, it's time to analyze your diet diary. Here's the part of keeping a diet diary that will help you see how you are really eating, this is where the tape recorder example comes in. You get to hear what you sound like, or in this case how your diet really stacks up to a healthy diet. Are you eating portions that are too large. Are there things that happened to you during the week that caused you to eat more. Did you skip a meal one day and then eat too much at another meal that day because of it. You probably don't know that some of your eating habits are really problems that are correctable once you see it in writing.
The next thing you can do is look at each day of your diet diary. Keeping a diet diary will help you to realize what you are doing wrong and think about what you can do to correct it or minimize the issue. If you realize that you do not have enough time to fix breakfast several days during the week, maybe fix something the night before. Make some eggs and warm them up in the morning or go ahead and pour a bowl of cereal so it will be ready the next morning. Keeping a diet diary will help you to resolve issues that are keeping you from losing weight. Repeat the analysis of each day and try to solve any issues that you see with the meals you are eating.
Keeping a diet diary for a couple more weeks until your problem areas are resolved will be very helpful to you.
Another way keeping a diet diary will be helpful is planning your meals in advance. Instead of writing down what you ate each day or after each meal, plan a week ahead what you will be eating. Put a checkmark beside the meals you eat to make sure you're sticking to your plan. If you plan ahead this will also help you to create your shopping list. Only buy the food for the meals you have planned to prepare. If that other food isn't around you won't be able to eat it. Out of sight, out of mind as the saying goes. Keeping a diet diary is an extremely helpful tool for your diet. You may be surprised how you sound.
