Procedure for installing VLC player in Ubuntu 8.10
Installation:
1) Remove old VlC
Remove the previous version of VLC to avoid a conflict when you upgrade.
From terminal:
sudo aptget
remove vlc
2) Include new repository.
Click System >
Administration >
Software Sources >
Third Party Software.
Add in this repository: deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ckorn/ubuntu intrepid main
Close Software Sources & Click reload/refresh the repositories.
3) Install vlc
To install Vlc: sudo aptget
install vlc
Procedure to install Realplayer in Ubuntu 8.10
Note :
1. If you don't have a copy of the realplayer package then download it from the below website
www.real.com/linux or else goto step 5 and follow the instructions
2.In that under Advanced Installation Options: choose DEB Package
3.double click the deb file to download it.
4.Open a terminal and change to the directory where the file was downloaded.
5.Grant execute permissions and run the setup using the following commands:
chmod 770 RealPlayer11GOLD.bin
sudo ./RealPlayer11GOLD.bin
6.Use the following default installation directory during the installation:
/opt/real/RealPlayer
7.The installer will copy the files and create menu shortcuts.
8.Then run the following commands.
cd /usr/lib/firefoxaddons/plugins
sudo ln s/opt/real/RealPlayer/mozilla/nphelix.xpt nphelix.xpt
sudo ln s/opt/real/RealPlayer/mozilla/nphelix.so nphelix.so
sudo mv /usr/lib/totem/gstreamer/libtotemcomplexplugin.so ~/.
9.now you go into applications >
sound & video there you will find real player application.
