subject: Natural Cures For Sore Throat [print this page]

A sore throat can be a cause of some of the worst pain you can experience. Sometimes they are mild, but other times the pain can be so intense that you don't know what to do! A sore throat is often caused by the common cold, and there is no medication you can take to make it go away faster, so often the only thing you can do is to try to manage the pain until the cold passes.

There are a few techniques and natural sore throat remedies you can try which include a warm compress on your throat, inhaling steam from hot water in the sink, and gargling salt water. I think the steam inhalations are my favorite because not only do they help cure this particular problem but they are very relaxing, you have your own personal mini sauna for yourself. A very common remedy is drinking plenty of fluids such as tea.

Gargling with saline water is a traditional remedy. One teaspoon salt is to be mixed in to a tumbler of warm water and used for gargling. This treatment eases out throat irritation, cleanses pharynx and improves circulation in throat.

Eucalyptus tea also works wonders as a sore throat cure. The oil has a soothing and cooling action on the throat and the tannins found in the herb act as an astringent. You can buy the Eucalyptus tea pre-made or you can make it yourself by boiling a cup of water with a couple teaspoons of the crushed leaves.

Many sore throats can be cured with natural remedies. Tincture capsicum has been used to alleviate a sore throat and increase vocal range when congested. Other sore throat cures include chamomile tea drinking this tea every few hour's gives good relief. Gargling with not just warm salt water but also water in which cayenne pepper has been added is said to be helpful.

In case the infection and inflammation will, and in most cases, should cause a mucous secretion, spicy foods have a decongestant effect and helps keep the larynx clear for breathing. Steam treatments are also advised with menthol added to the boiling water.

A lack of vitamin C can also weakened peoples ability to fight off colds and infections. Good sources of vitamin E can be found in oranges, red peppers, strawberries, blackcurrants and watercress. Iron is also an essential part of your body's defenses given that it is required in the formation of antibodies. Iron is located in liver, bread and sesame seeds.

Steam inhalation: Place a towel over your head and sit or stand with your head positioned directly over the steam. The purpose of the towel is to trap the steam and direct it upwards so that you can get the maximum benefit. For those with chronic nasal congestion, you can add herbal extracts such as eucalyptus oil or menthol into the steaming hot water which should assist in opening the clogged nose.
