Yeast Infection-Can It Be Cured At Home?

Although yeast infections can affect both men and women, this article is just going to focus on yeast infections in women. That's not because these infections areany more or less serious in women than they are in men, it's just thatwomen might want to take a treatment approach which ismore holistic and less medical than using the standard antifungal treatments.

After all, the genital area in women is very sensitive, and as many women can testify, the repeated use of powerful antifungal agents does not always bring about a complete cure. In some cases, this is because a woman has underlying conditions which promote yeast infection, such as diabetes. That's why it may be important to get the medical checkup if you are repeatedly experiencing infection with yeast or Candida albicans, as it is scientifically known. But assuming that you've been given the all clear on the medical front, and you're still getting yeast infections, what can you do about it?

Yeast infections can affect the whole of the genital area, and spread onto the thighs and pubic region as well. It's important to treat them before they get to this stage, an approach which has the added advantage of allowing you to avoid the intense itching which can accompany a yeast infection as it develops.

So it's important that whenyou first detect the slight irritation and perhaps the redness which accompany the early stages of a yeast infection, you act quickly. There are several home remedies which you can use, which I discussed at greater length on my blog yeast infection home remedy, but essentially they are as follows:

Probiotics - a popular remedy that can be used at home. Probioticscontain natural friendly bacteria which inhibitthe growth of yeast infections such as Candida. The most common is Lactobacillus acidophilus, which is found in yoghurt andblocks the growth of Candida in the vagina. (Yoghurt may be applied on and in the vagina as a treatment).

Boric acid - another popular natural home remedy for used infection is boric acid, which hasantiseptic and antifungal qualities. In one study boric acid was found to beas effective in curing yeast infection as itraconazole. And boric acid suppositoriescan be more effective than fluconazole, one of the most common medications prescribed for yeast infection. But boric acid should never be taken internally, nor should it be placed on any wound or scratch.

Tea tree oil isa natural essential oil andpowerful in clearing up yeast infections. However, it needs to be used in diluted form, in a carrier oil.

Bear in mind that you may find these home remedies both natural and effective, but if they don't work, or your yeast infection repeatedly occurs, you need to seek medical advice.
