NO!
At least, thats what I always thought.
I've always believed that having more than one antivirus engine installed on the same computer is not just a bad idea but that it is a positively dumb one.
You see, antivirus programs from different security vendors can be like two little kids in a playground - sometimes they just won't play nicely together!
For me, that has always been a shame as I have tested and reviewed a great many antivirus programs over the last few years and they all have their relative strengths and weaknesses. Combining several of them together would therefore be a very positive move, if only they wouldn't conflict with each other.
New Japanese security vendor Coranti may just have rewritten the rules on antivirus programs however.
Their new product - Coranti 2010 Anti-Virus & Anti-Spyware - has thrown the rule book out and combines 4 engines from different vendors into one uber product.
As you can see from the screenshot above, I've given this program a go and I was pleasantly surprised by the results.
Whilst I found it a bit sluggish - it was running 4 engines after all - it did work exactly as described and detected items of interest that other security programs had missed.
I'm going to keep Coranti Anti-Virus & Anti-Spyware on my laptop for a little longer to see if it runs a bit smoother now that it has already run a full scan of my system but even now I am quite impressed with the technology behind it.
So, to answer the question, it does seem that you can run more than one antivirus engine on your PC at the same time and that, surely, can only be a good thing.
