The most popular, interesting and trendy men's shirt style names

Ever leave the department store with a migrane from trying to figure out

which style of dress shirt you need? In the past few years the growing

lingo of shirt style names has become a language unto itself. As men's

fashion advances, so does the terminology required to keep up with the

times. We've put together a primer of the most popular, interesting and

trendy men's shirt style names so that you know what you're getting

before you bring it home and try it on - yes, we hate the fitting room

too. Take notes, there will be a quiz later, and it's called 'looking

sharp'.

Classic Fit or Standard Fit - Classic Fit dress shirts are the eager

beavers of the buttondown world. These loose fit shirts attempt to

accommodate all body types, and in doing so are shaped for the 'largest

common denominator'. They are generally roomier in the sides, sleeves

and waist than other shirts. Because of the additional fabric, they may

hold up better against wrinkles underneath a suit where your generously

proportioned shirt can stay mostly out of sight. Additionally, for those

with extra cushion around the middle, classic fit may provide added

comfort. Remember, the word classic here is a bit of a misnomer. Head to

a vintage shop for a true throwback - in the 40's and 50's men wore

sharp cut suits which required shirts far trimmer than these billowing

monstrosities.

Slim Fit Shirts or Trim Fit Shirts - Slim Fit Shirt are designed to

contour to a thin or athletic body type, keeping a professional and trim

silhouette. These shirts tuck in to pants without leaving a 'muffin top'

around the edge, assuming you don't have too much of your own pastry to

add to the mix. Slim Fit Shirts are cut closer in the sleeves and along

the side/waist of the shirt to keep you looking smooth whether you're

tucked in or out. Pair Slim Fit Shirts with flat front slacks for a

clean professional look or leave untucked over a pair of fitted

distressed jeans for a metropolitan take on Casual Friday.

Athletic Fit or Body Fit or Custom Fit - Athletic Fit are shaped like

you would be if you actually used your gym membership. They have more

fabric in the upper back and shoulders and taper down to a 'V' shape

with a trim wasteline. The sleeves tend to be tighter than classic fit

shirts to show off the results of all of those preacher curls. Many

Athletic Fit shirts have lycra or another stretch material woven into

their fabric to allow the shirt to literally hug your chiseled frame.

This has the added benefit of reducing the visibility of wrinkles.

Athletic fit shirts which are body fitting are more suited to the

nightlife scene than the workplace, as they tend to be more casual in

nature.

Hooded Shirts - Yes, you heard right. Men's hooded dress shirts are now

a viable and incredibly stylish option, letting you add a touch of

street cred to your button-down day. Hooded shirts can (and should) be

worn with a bit of flair and add a unique statement to any outfit. They

can be paired with distressed jeans or dressed up with tweed or khaki

pants for a slightly ironic twist on classic prep style. If you're not

sure whether you can pull this look off, remember: it's all about the

attitude. The hooded shirt is a conversation piece that you'll be

getting compliments on all day.

Now you're equipped with the knowledge to cure your men's department

migrane. Head back to the store and find the fit that's best suited for

your body type and desired look, then show off you new style. No one

will believe that you needed a translation lesson - instead they'll

think that you wrote the book!
