In August 2010, an employee became symbolic of worker frustration by exiting his job in an unforgettable fashion. The incident was reported in all the media. The act was so outrageous that it commanded attention and comment. The employee's name is Steven Slater, and the employer is Jet Blue.
What Happened?
We all know how frustrating airline travel has become. The delays, the crowds, the searches, the rude passengers, and overwhelmed employees. Imagine what it's like to be a Flight Attendant. It's difficult enough to be a passenger, but if your job entails dealing with hundreds of passengers a day, you can imagine the stress. And, when this particular flight arrived at JFK Airport in New York, the Flight Crew made the standard announcement: "Please remain seated until the plane has arrived at the gate and come to a complete stop." However, as is often the case, a non-compliant passenger, in an apparent rush, began removing her bags from the overhead compartment. And, when Flight Attendant Steve Slater tried to stop her the luggage hit his head. Slater lost it. He began cursing on the PA system, grabbed a couple of beers from the fridge, opened the emergency exit, and slid down the inflatable ramp. What an exit! Some passengers were dumbfounded, others confused, while many cheered his actions.
The police later arrested Slater at his home, and he spent the night in a Bronx jail. However, so many people related to his "resignation" that he soon had hundreds of Facebook, and other social media supporters, and hundreds of thousands of on-line fans.
Is This a Good Way to Quit?
Most of us probably fantasize about making a "grand exit" from an unpleasant job. However, few do it. Oh, employees may grumble and complain, bad-mouth their employer, and may even say "I Quit!" with a flourish, but rarely do they go much further. This is fortunate. Irrational and bizarre workplace behaviors are disruptive, disconcerting, and often downright scary. What if Slater's meltdown had occurred mid-flight?
Some discontented employees go even further than Slater. We're all aware of workplace violence and criminal behaviors, occasionally even resulting in injury or death.
A Cautionary Word
Keep your cool! A rational, reasoned and graceful exit is probably best. You don't want to "burn any bridges." You may need a recommendation from your employer, a reference, or even a transfer. You may be able to negotiate a nice severance package.
Don't be too self-centered. While you may gain temporary satisfaction by indulging your temper or pride, you may later regret your impulsivity. And, your actions may harm others, intentionally or unintentionally. Sure you have a right to be mad. But be aware it may backfire. Slater lost a twenty year career. Now he's enjoying his 15 minutes of fame, and may even leverage his celebrity into something lucrative. However, he, and you, shouldn't count on it.
