or DANB. This certification is required of all who work as dental

assistants nationwide. The four hour exam will test your knowledge

of dental procedures as well as of the more practical aspects of the

administration of a dental office.

The Associate Degree course in dental assisting is given by some

community colleges and several universities. It is a complete course

that will give you a thorough grounding in subjects like dental

science, radiology, laboratory procedures, and administration of a

dental office. Once you have obtained your associate degree, you are

well prepared to pass the CDA exam.

Another way of obtaining CDA certification is by on-the-job

training. You will need to work for two years under the supervision

of a practicing dentist before you can apply for certification.

There are also programs of shorter duration, generally one year,

given by vocational training schools and technical institutes. These

programs are practical and will immerse you from the first day in

the day-to-day activities of a dental office. With the first-hand

knowledge gained with these courses you will be able to pass the CDA

exam easily.

The duties of an assistant are varied. You will be required to work

in close collaboration with the dentist and the dental hygienist.

Among your duties will be to keep dental records of all patients,

preparing the patients for dental treatments, and taking and

developing x-rays. You will also need to assist the dental hygienist

with preventative cleanings.

An assistant can work in dentists offices as well as in the dental

departments of clinics and hospitals. With the preparation you have

received you can also work in the sales departments of stores

specializing in dental products. There are also many job

opportunities in firms that manufacture dental products. A certified

assistant can be a positive addition to any company that is involved
