Panic attacks have been described as a severe form of shyness by some. They are usually initiated by the thought of being in circumstances that you feel will overwhelm you. Nine times out of ten all of these emotions are totally unwarranted and severely hinder your life, as I'm sure you already know.
Adults usually have the worst cases of panic attacks, yet the young are not protected from them altogether either. Younger people tend to suffer severe shyness rather than panic attacks. However, sometimes, depending on the depth of the shyness there is a possibility that this could turn into anxiety attacks as they get older. Best then to nip it in the bud as early as possible.
What is a panic attack like? Awful really! Your heart beats so rapidly that it feels like it is about to beat out of your chest. You may feel a strong sense of wooziness that will cause you to want to get out of the situation, or you may begin to sweat and have a feeling of intense apprehension. Some fear that they're going to have a heart attack.
Very uncomfortable sensations to experience. Each symptom of the attacks only seems to make matters worse as you start to wonder what is wrong with you and beat yourself up for not being able to handle the situation. Especially when the attack is over and you realize that you had no need to be so fearful of the situation that you just experienced.
This is the same feeling associated with people who have social phobia. You have to understand that this condition will destroy your life if you don't figure out a way to control it now.
How can it ruin your life?
Panic attacks will keep you from being social and as humans it is instinctive that we desire social interaction. Our brain has ways of protecting us so we don't put ourselves in harmful situations, even imagined ones. Panic attacks happen though when an anticipated danger gets amplified by your own imagination. Most often what you are panicking about either isn't real or never materializes into reality.
Your imagination is usually working in overdrive to convince you that a particular situation will be worse than what it actually is or could be. Think about it, you are not going to die in a social situation are you? Should the worst happen you will still be alive.
But people who suffer from panic attacks do not see the difference as their mind has convinced them they are in severe danger. So in essence the person suffering from the mental confusion is their own worst enemy.
People who experience panic attacks often do not feel in control of their life.
You are at the mercy of any given situation. When a panic attack is brought on you have a desire to get immediately away from the place that is causing you the strong feeling of anxiety. This is the instinctive flight away from fear.
In reality you ARE never in control because you cannot control when an attack is going to occur. This makes a person feel as if they are going to go insane and will lead to them being socially a loner because there will be a lot of events that the mind will create impractical perceived threats of harm or death.
