subject: Keeping it Green [print this page] Keeping it Green Keeping it Green
Global warming is a prevalent issue in the world right now, not only because of its impact, but because the viewpoints on the issue are so varied from one individual to the next. Some people believe that this is an important issue that needs resolution, while others feel that the earth is experiencing natural climate cycles. I know where my personal stance is, but also firmly believe that regardless of our opinion on the issue, there are things that we can do to reduce our energy expenditures and make the world a greener place.
Getting our carbon footprint down, regardless of our viewpoint, is a positive thing. You could drive yourself crazy trying to reduce that footprint to zero, but there are approaches that can be taken that are easy, simple, and free! Our day-to-day lives are filled with new inventions that make living much easier than it has ever been. A great example of this is the paper napkin: a simple, lightweight device that makes takeout eating far easier than it would be otherwise. While convenience is key, we have come to realize that in order to produce this product, large numbers of trees need to be sacrificed. In our house, we have switched to cloth tea towels, which can easily be washed with the rest of our laundry. Not only are these good as new every time they are washed, but the cloth is so much gentler on my fresh baby face! Buy and consume more local foods, of the natural and/or organic variety.
I have seen some people recoil at this idea, who think that organic food is reserved for dreadlocked hippies with names like Sunflower and River Raven who walk around barefoot and boycott both razors and bathing. But here is the good news for anyone who may question this "local food" movement: Research has shown that natural and organic foods are better both for the environment and for your personal health. So even if you couldn't care less about global warming, make the switch for selfish reasons. You will be supporting your local businesses, and enjoying this newfound concept called FLAVOR. So whether you are a leaf-eating vegetarian or a sworn carnivore, you will enjoy both the taste and the health benefits of natural and organic foods. You'll probably want to 86 the plastic water bottles. I know, they're totally convenient, but new studies show that BPAs (chemicals found in the plastic) can have adverse health effects. Nalgene has started to make BPA-free bottles, which are great. Metal bottles, which are often completely recyclable, are another viable alternative. Even glass bottles are making a surge - try looking at LoveBottleDOTnet.
If home-brewed water is your drink of choice, Brita and PUR both make great filtration systems. New studies suggest that tap water is often healthier than its expensive, bottled cousin. Municipal water districts are governed by the EPA, which mandates multiple daily tests, while bottled water providers are governed by the far-less-stringent FDA, which only requires testing once a week. Bottom line? Tap water is, believe it or not, the healthier choice. You can also exercise your environmental consciousness by purchasing recyclable packaging, or reducing your packaging needs altogether. While I love pouring that liquid laundry detergent into the machine (along with my tea towels), I've switched to powdered in order to use the recyclable cardboard box. It's an easy change to make. And if I only purchase one or two things from the store, I'll generally decline the bag. Do I really need the extra assistance to carry my stuff ten feet to the parking lot? And while this is personal preference, I don't bag certain produce items, like potatoes and cucumbers. Our wallets can be another great form of motivation for reducing our carbon footprint.
I recently switched my lightbulbs from traditional ones to the little twisting CFLs, which burn much cooler. I use 13-watt bulbs, and get 60 watts of light! Another great tactic is to use power strips for all electronic home appliances. Most electronics, including cell phone chargers, continue to draw in electricity even when they are technically not being used. This allows them to start up faster. I made the switch to power strips, and subsequently cut my electric bill in half! Another simple and quick daily tip is to get a Facebook account (for FREE) and install the "lil Green Patch" application. You get an online garden, pick as many friends as the program allows and send them an online plant for their online garden. For every ten friends you send a cute little flower to, you save one square foot of rain forest (the real kind, not the virtual kind). It's easy, and the plants are cute! For those of you who like your cars and want to keep on driving those miles to work, you may be interested to learn that according to the ACEEE, the greenest car in the United States is the Honda Civic (for the 6th straight year in a row!)
