Blu-ray player will not display some pretty sharp pictures, but there is this very desirable feature of "restoring the last stop." You can stop, and then decide, from the beginning or from where you left off, but if you have the CD and put it back after losing that opportunity and will start again from scratch.

Read the specs carefully

I bought this player because according to the manufacturers specs it would play the file formats for Divx and MKV. I hooked the player up right away and noticed it wouldn't play the Divx files or even recognize them. I updated the player to the latest software and this didnt help. I contacted Sony support and they told me to look at the fine print on page 32 in the manual and in the fine print it states that Divx is only for the Canadian players. This upset me quite a bit that they can't give that support to US consumers unless they buy a PS3. I don't want to run a PS3 with 300+ watts to be able to watch these file formats and Blu-rays. I would much rather use a blu-ray player with 20-25 watts. I also couldnt get the BDP-s370 to play any MKV files, Sony said it should play them but my player wouldn't so I had to return the player. I ended up buying the LG BD570 and that one will play anything I throw at it. I dont think I'll be buying any Sony products after this.

Very nicely design product

Sony still has the knack to create slick products.

The physical device itself is nicely designed, the user interface is nice, its use is intuitive, the image quality looks great, and the internet features are easy to set up and use (Netflix player, NPR player, Pandora radio, etc.)

I can't say that I have tried all the features of this player, but what I have tried works great and is a pleasure to use.

In contrast, I previously ordered a Samsung Blu-ray player (the BD-C5500). Although it played movies and Netflix online shows fine, the overall experience using it was quite awful. I couldn't wait to return it.

Won't play some region-free discs

for some reason this player won'y play Wonders of the Solar System (a region-free title). The film worked just fine on my Sammy BD-P1600 and (now retired) Insignia player.

Updatting the player was futile as it did not improve things.

Very Good Player and Divx / AVI ARE SUPPORTED with a workaround!

First off, let me say the Blu-Ray player seems *potentially* awesome so far. All of the online content works well. Firmware update was a snap. Up-converted DVDs look good. I will check an actual Blu-Ray out tonight but I'm not worried based on other reviews I have already read.

It's disappointing that Netflix supports Instant Queue only (you can't browse all available titles). From what I read this is fairly standard for most Netflix-enabled players, although some let you browse the top 100 titles in each genre. So, I have to use my computer to find/add titles to the queue and the titles I added immediately show up on the Blu-Ray player. Integrating Netflix browsing would earn another half star... :)

My only other big gripe is that DLNA is NOT currently supported. The Sony site did NOT make this point very obvious, but it does indicate that it will be supported in a July 2010 update. I look forward to that update greatly and will likely increase my rating once it happens.

My only other gripe was nearly a show-stopper. The UI would not recognize any AVI or DIVX files on the USB drive. However, there is a very easy workaround. Simply rename your files from *.avi (or *.divx) to *.mp4 and they will play just fine! Apparently, the firmware does support the AVI container and the DIVX codec, but it hides the files (MPAA probably thinks that blocking DIVX will cure piracy despite the millions of perfectly legal uses for the codec). Anyway, it works. If Sony should "break" this in a future update, I will lower the review to 1 star and promptly eBay the box. However, I am hopeful that Sony realizes how stupid it is to block a single container/codec when piracy can & does exist in every possible format. :)

Hopefully, with the DLNA update, they will come around and realize that blocking AVI/DIVX in any way is a bad move and allow you to play the files without renaming them first.
