Some people will tell you that you need skill to handicap a horse race and come up with winners. Some insist that it's just luck.
"Some people have it," they say, "And some people don't."
While it's true that skill at handicapping is a very good thing to have, I don't think we should overlook how important luck is to success at picking horses. Or dogs. Or the right cards or how long to shake the dice. I think luck is much more of a factor than I used to think it was.
So, what if you're not a lucky person? What can you do about it? Is it just fate or is there something else at work here that you can control? Most people will tell you that you're either born lucky or unlucky. I would have said that only a short while ago, but I've reconsidered.
Although I wouldn't say I'm a lucky person, I've seen how, by focusing on days when I seem to be a little luckier than other days, I win. Knowing when you're going to have a lucky day - and we all have them - can help you choose which day to go to the track or buy a lottery ticket or take a chance on a sweepstakes.
So, if you're a horse player, pay attention to how you feel when you wake up in the morning. Notice when you have good luck and be prepared to take advantage of it. And, of course, if you're having an unlucky day, maybe it's a good idea to stay home or go to a movie or something instead of to the races.
