If I had a dime for every time someone told me that they hated their boss, I would have a lot of dimes. It is one of the most common complaints that I hear from people that are unhappy in their job. Bosses drive people crazy because they are dumb and don't know what we do or don't care or expects me to be available at all hours of the night. I understand, I have bosses that I have, um, not cared for too. I used to just get all bent out of shape because my boss was just a waste of office space. But then I realized something. I am spending my time hating this guy when the reality is; it's not his fault, its mine.
Did I choose him or did he choose me?
"What's not his fault?" you might ask. The fact that I work for him is not his fault. The fact that I have put myself in a position to be in this job is not his fault. The fact that I found myself in the position of having to deal with this particular boss was my fault. It was my fault because I didn't take the action or the control or the initiative, not to work for him. Sure maybe after a few years of griping and complaining I took another job somewhere and got away from him. But why did I end up there in the first place? Why did I have to spend any time at all working for a boss that was an idiot?
Be in Control: Avoid Bad Bosses
Many times we end up working for a boss that we hate because we didn't take control of our career to begin with. We, either by choice or lack of making a choice, let our jobs pull us along instead of us driving it. When we let our career or job take us where it wants to go instead of us taking our career where we want to go, we risk getting stuck in bad situations and working for bad bosses.
