Adult ADHD Alleviating Conflicts and Disruptions At Home

For me living with an ADHD spouse has had its ups and downs sometimes appearing that adult ADHD is synonymous with conflict and disruption. If managed incorrectly adult attention deficit disorder around the home can explode into a toxic soup filled with nonstop chaos and havoc, turning what should be the inner sanctum of relaxing bliss into a never ending battlefield of ideas.

Reality television starts at home

A new episode of what could be perceived as bad reality television often occurs when one or both spouses are riddled with inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity or restlessness. Families can change the channel on their home version of reality television by sitting down with a family therapist and peeling the layers of this tear jerking onion away until the core reasons are reveled why this never ending home drama sequel never seems to end. Once family members understand the emotional voids the ADHD adult is trying to fill they can only then set a course to boost self esteem, increase confidence, and replace the ADHD adults energy draining reality television drama with more productive, and less stressful activities.

Moodiness if often part of the mix

Just as in reality television the home front would not be complete without a dose of moodiness. While watching this unfold on television can be quite entertaining, it's not all that much fun when a serious case of unpredictable moodiness is directed at you. It's important for family members to understand that these mood swings are often not connected to, or triggered by, a particular event or person, but are likely caused by neurotransmitter imbalances, the ups and downs of prescription medications, poor dietary choices (simple carbs, white rice, etc), and coexisting conditions such as anxiety, depression, or bipolar disorder.

The seemingly never ending series of daily symptoms can leave the ADHD adult feeling exhausted, helpless, worried, and create a toxic environment where hope and happiness begin to fade. If you are on this sinking ship and your personal behavioral compass is acting like it is stuck in the Bermuda triangle it is time to seek out professional help.

In order to be happy at home the ADHD adult must let go of the past

Many ADHD adults are saddled with long-lasting feelings of guilt and shame stemming from failures in the past. This may even be the case if their shortcomings were caused by undiagnosed ADHD symptoms, and not caused by a lack of motivation, laziness, or disinterest.

By working with a family therapist or a cognitive behavioral therapist family members can help their struggling beloved ADHD adult understand that until they stop living in the past they will have little chance of being happy in the present. Once acceptance is embraced, leaving old destructive baggage behind, can new possibilities, opportunities, and avenues of joy be explored to their fullest.
