Situated in the heart of central Bangkok is one of the city's most popular zoos Dusit Zoo. It is situated between the Parliament and Dusit Palace, along the Rama V Road. In fact the grounds of the zoo was once part of King Rama V's private palace garden. The zoo premises spread out across 47 acres, of which 12 acres is dedicated to lakes.
After the death of King Rama V, the gardens were neglected. However during Rama VIII's reign, the newly created government requested the palace gardens in order to convert it into a zoo. This was in 1938. Together with the garden the King also donated a number of animals belonging to the palace, including deer. In 1954 the management of the zoo was handed over to the State Zoological Park Organization.
Dusit Zoo or Khao Din as it is known is not only the oldest zoo in Thailand but also one of the most popular. There are over 2000 animals, both local and foreign, from a number of species. These include a large selection of monkey species, kangaroo, giraffe, zebra, elephant, bear, tiger, crocodile, hippopotamus, and penguin. There is also a vastly popular bird show, thrice a day on weekdays and five times on weekends.
Apart from enjoying the animals, children will love the play grounds and small rides. For adults, there is a delightful tram ride around the zoo. Apart from this, the zoo is a beautiful place to relax and have a picnic under the trees. Paddle boats are available for those who would like a leisurely ride down the lake.
