Do you have any idea of what testosterone really is? We do know it has something to do with the male sex drive but few of us know that it is a hormone that is produced not just in the body of the male but in the female as well. In the male it enhances the natural growth and development of the sexual organs but the male characteristics also. Testosterone is what makes the male look masculine and the female feminine. Testosterone in the male is produced in the testes, in the reproductive glands where sperm is produced, while in the female it is produced in the ovaries. A few of the effects of male testosterone are:
The maturity of the prostate and the growth of the sex organs;
The distribution of male hair such as facial hair;
Fat distribution, strength and changes in body muscle mass;
Sex drive and function;
Mood and energy levels.
How is the testosterone level (T level) determined? A man's age determined the normal T level. To keep the T level normal the brain and the testes communicate with one another, i.e. when there is too much testosterone; the brain will signal the testes to stop production and if there is not enough testosterone the brain will send the testes a signal to produce more. The following is a chart showing the normal T level for males of certain ages:
Age 25 to 24 years old 446 to 786 ng/dL
Age 35 to 44 years old 455 to 879 ng/dL
Age 45 to 54 years old 394 to 818 ng/dL
Age 55 to 64 years old 366 to 756 ng/dL
Age 65 to 74 years old 327 to 721 ng/dL
Ng= nanograms
dL = deciliters
If your T level is less than 300, it's a signal that you may require medical attention and an evaluation that should be made by a doctor.
A feeling of fatigue, no energy, decreased sexual function and/or depression and mood swings may indicate that the system of communication between you brain and the testes has been disrupted and you have a low T. Low testosterone has a medical name and that name is hypogonadism..
In a recent study, it was estimated that some thirteen million men, in the United States, that over the age of 45 suffer from hypogonadism (low T). It is natural for men to lose testosterone as they age however, lot T is not a part of that natural aging process.
Men that are at high risk for low T, are those that are obese, have diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, HIV, or asthma/COPD. There are other indicators of high risk for low T, these are only a few.
Some women undergo testosterone therapy. Women that undergo such therapy are those that have had hysterectomies, are post menopausal or have low estrogen levels. The testosterone therapy for women is referred to as "the other hormone." The reason for women to have testosterone therapy is for their own well being as well for an increased sex drive.
