subject: Maintaining Healthy Teeth Is A Project [print this page]

When most people are thinking about health issues, they don't reflect much on dental health. In difficult financial times, it is common for dental treatment to be put off. But there have been many warnings to keep up with your treatments.

The primary contributor of oral cancer is the use of tobacco. But, there are instances in which people who are non-smokers have been stricken with the disease.

The illness is most often realized after the age of 40. Statistics show that only half of the individuals who develop oral cancer live more than five years after it is diagnosed, but there are reasons to be optimistic.

By eating a lot of fruit and veggies, you are able to prevent many forms of oral cancer. Also you can combat it fully through finding it early. Through the world's advancing technology, cells that are able to become cancerous can be detected, allowing a doctor to treat it before it's even a problem.

Maladies that affect the tissues that hold your teeth in place are referred to as periodontal disease. There are two main stages of periodontal disease, gingivitis or inflammation of the gums, which is milder and can be reversed, and periodontitis, which develops when gingivitis is left untreated and inflammation spreads, and this can lead to the teeth becoming loose and eventually falling out.

Smoking, medications, and defective fillings are known factors that can contribute to this disease. The symptoms of periodontal disease are: bleeding games, increased space between the teeth, and a bad smell in one's breath. Only good oral care such as daily brushing, flossing and use of mouthwash can prevent this disease, as well as regular dentist visits.

Cavities are not simply holes in you teeth, these are infections. Without proper care along with the consumption of a lot of sugar, you will probably end up with them sooner or later.

There is a material that has been used to fill cavities in teeth for over a hundred years called dental amalgam, and it's made of several metallic materials. Some apprehension about the safety of dental amalgam has surfaced in recent years, due to the mercury present in this material.

It is the consensus of several health organizations, including the U.S. Public Health Service, the National Institutes of Health, and the World Health Organization, that this alloy is safe to use.

and the National Institutes of Health, have all concluded that amalgam usage is safe. Dental amalgam has long been respected for its use as filling material due to its low cost, durability and strength; however, there are other options.

If you choose not to have amalgam fillings, your leading alternative is the use of white composite fillings. These fillings are directly bonded to the tooth, supports its structure and are hardly noticeable.

It's essential to have professional teeth cleanings on a regular basis, in order to keep soft gum tissue and bones healthy.

Consider the case of an accountant who neglected dental care for ten years, and then had to have a root canal and a crown which could have been prevented by regular dental care. When periodontal disease strikes deep pockets can form at the gumline.

You cannot solve the problem through simple brushing. These deep pockets can be closed by root planning and scaling, which will also eradicate infected tissue and bacteria, and prevent additional tartar accumulation by smoothing the root surfaces. The costs related to maintaining your oral health are much less than the costs will be if you should have dental problems.

No one wants bad breath or unsightly teeth and gums. This is due to the simple fact so many things are capable of making it start.

Something as simple as the onions or garlic you've had on your lunch can cause halitosis to rear its head. Dry mouth, tobacco, and poor dental hygiene, are other causes of bad breath.

Conditions such as postnasal drip or even liver or kidney disease can also cause halitosis. Some food we consume are apt to cause bad breath because it can become trapped along with bacteria on the prominent taste buds of the tongue.

We can avoid this foul situation by avoiding those foods that are most prone to causing this problem. To keep this from happening, remember to brush and scrape your tongue, and rinse out your mouth with antiseptic mouthwash.

With today's technological advances, we're light years beyond the Babylonian's chewing sticks that they were using by 3500 B.C. But, proper tooth brushing is still your most powerful tool to maintain your dental health, despite all of the hype surrounding the latest technological advances.
