A Look At Te Araroa New Zealand
A Look At Te Araroa New Zealand

Te Araroa means Long Pathways in English. Te Araroa New Zealand is the longest walking pathway in the world, due to be completed in February 2011. This trail is 2600 km long. And though it has only been a network of uncompleted trails in the past, one man with a vision to see it completed has walked the entire route.

The idea of a long walking trail was introduced in 1967, but the idea was abandoned due to a lack of funds and interest in shorter walks. Then in 1995, Geoff Chapple, an Auckland journalist, again proposed the idea. And over the course of two years, this man walked the length of the proposed trail, writing a book to tell his tale and prove the viability of his idea.

Since then, the Aurora Trust has mapped the project, obtained a grant and begun their work to create this long-coming New Zealand landmark. This trail will provide hikers an opportunity to experience the wonders and beauty of New Zealand like never before, taking then across the beautiful countryside, through forests, over volcanoes and mountain passes, and down the stunning coastline.

Many predict that the opening of the Te Araroa Trail will boost tourism to the country and prove to be a very beneficial project in many ways. People all around the world are planning to travel here and take the hike. Two women have already committed to trek this entire trail to raise money for charity, also working to promote women's adventure travel.

A testament to the kiwi spirit, the trail opens a host of possibilities for all who enjoy hiking and taking walks. The trail will also be broken down into shorter loops for those who wish to take shorter treks and enjoy a breathtaking opportunity to explore the inner wonders and beauty located at the heart of this country.
