If, like me, you have been starting an online business during 2010 then sometimes it would have felt like you were arriving a little late at the party. There are so many successful people out there, so many smart ideas out there, so many niches uncovered and exploited. Surely it's too late for any of the rest of us to get a bit of the action....isn't it?
Having done a little thinking about this, I think there are 3 good reasons why it definitely is not too late.
Reason 1 Consumers are getting so much more comfortable buying online good online.
Just a few years ago I would still feel a little uneasy about entering my credit card details on line. Now, with numerous successful online purchases behind me, I rarely give it a second thought.
Reason 2 We are getting the gadgets we need to consume eBooks and information products.
The new Kindle and I pad are both gorgeous gadgets and a delight to own. It is no surprise therefore that Amazon reported this summer that the sale of eBooks outstripped hardback sales for the first time. Indeed earlier this month the Association of American Publishers reported that US eBook sales rose by 193% between Jan and Aug this year. That's 193% in less than a year....Wow!
Reason 3 The internet is simply more convenient for most purchases.
Now I know I won't convince the devoted shopaholic on this point. However I would argue that if you have a busy life the internet wins hands down over the shopping mall. You can compare prices and get the best deal in minutes. You can complete your purchase at midnight dressed in your pyjamas. You can download that vital information product and be reading it within five minutes of turning on your computer.
In conclusion I think that saying, in 2010, that it's too late to start an online business is like saying in 1966 that there was no point getting into popular music.
Sure we had already seen Elvis, the Beach Boys and the Beatles by then. But music grew and evolved and continues to do so. So will the internet marketplace.
So come on let's get strumming...I will be John you can be Ringo!
