Last weekend, I purchased the Insignia NS-42P650A11 from BB for $449.00, and then returned it the very next day when this Samsung went on sale. Although the Insignia is essentially a less featured, re-branded Samsung, this TV is well worth the extra $50.00 that I paid for the upgrade. Whether TVs or mp3 players, I prefer Samsung products, which tend to be competitively priced and have superb quality and durability. I am replacing a 27' Samsung TV that I have had for 12 years and still works flawlessly!
This was my first time purchasing an HDTV, and I really did not know what all to look for in one. I am not well-versed in the technology, and the associates at BB really helped out here, encouraging me to choose a plasma over an 37 inch LCD. I hope this information helps prospective buyers who might be on the fence about the two or about buying this HDTV in general.
Some features this has that the Insignia does not:
1. Slightly better PQ, although both can play at 1920 x 1080i
2. Cell light brightness function, which really does make a difference
3. A more sophisticated, although awkward and large, remote that allows direct changes of picture/sound mode and picture size without having to go into the on-screen menu
4. Option to transfer mp3 files and play them through the TV. This might be a common feature on these newer TVs, but I am new to this technology so I would not know.
5. USB port and 1 extra HDMI
6. The touch of red color strip across the bottom of the TV giving it a classier look
7. A much sturdier base. I carried both of these TVs upstairs and found out upon unpacking the box that one of the reasons I had a harder time with the Samsung was because of the much more solid stand.
8. Software upgrade via USB port and self diagnosis capability.
9. I am sure there are other great features, but I am still learning the TV.
10. Screen encasing is much nicer with the touch of red strip at the bottom and clear "lip" hang below the Samsung name.
Addressing other reviews of this TV:
1. I have not heard any buzzing. I wonder if the buzzing some people are getting is due to their AV wiring configuration. I do not have anything hooked up to my TV except a DVD player and my DVR box.
2. The stand is not flimsy
3. The volume capabilities are great. I keep this at 14-18 and I can hear it 3 rooms away. I think the volume goes up to 100. I am not sure. I got it to 57, and it still had a ways to go, but I was not testing it!
4. Hey, the screen is made of glass, there is going to be some glare. I do not find that it interferes with viewing, and I have it sitting in a corner between two windows. I enjoy the PQ during the day as much as I do during the night.
5. Unlike some other reviewers, when I registered this online on 6/13, I did not get a 2-year warranty. I was certainly hoping for it though! What I did find out was that my TV was manufactured just a few weeks ago. Who knows maybe some of the newer sets have had the buzzing issue addressed.
6. After reading some complaints here, I cannot imagine how many more features some people want in a $500, 42' HDTV. Since this is my first one, I do not have anything to measure it against, but I am pretty certain that I have gotten one great TV, especially for this price!
PS: I got an incredible cherry oak, three-shelf TV stand with black glass shelves from Target for $129.00. The TV looks gorgeous on this thing! Maybe you can find it through Amazon as they sell a lot of Target stuff here with free shipping.

fantastic tv!!!
Initially I had questions about this TV, plasma, 720p, and missing other features were concerns for me. But when you power this set on, and connect your game system of choice ( I have 360 and PS3) IT WILL BLOW YOUR MIND!!!! High resolution screen, great theater sound! If you have a 1 bedroom apartment like I do It will light up your bedroom. My wife thought 42" is pretty big, but looking at movies in blu-ray on it with great HDMI connections you will be in heaven!!!! I hooked up my hardrive to it and went down memory lane with the USB slot. It has a bunch of customization features which really wowed me. I was going to spend $700 at the Sony outlet store for a 40" LCD, I am glad I waited. 1080p is a great feature but you wont miss it if you get this set. Trust me you will be pleased.
Great TV, Terrific Price
I've had this TV for about three weeks now, which should mean that's it's already broken-in. The picture from this TV is incredible, as is the sound coming straight from the speakers. This tv is sitting in my bedroom hooked up to a DirecTV HD box, a Toshiba DVD player, and a Sony PS3. The bedroom is pretty well light-controlled, which makes viewing even more enjoyable. Picture quality from all three sources is great...everything is run through HDMI except the DVD player, which is going through component cables. The DirecTV box is set to output at 1080i.
I have not experienced any of the problems that other owners have reported. My TV does not have any picture flaws and it does not have the audio buzzing that others have experienced. The outstanding picture quality, sound, advanced menu options and the lack of flaws are the reasons I am giving this TV a 5-star rating.
Pros:
Great Picture
Great Sound (through TV speakers)
Great Picture Adjustment Options (I was able to calibrate the greyscale)
Upgradeable (I've already run the latest firmware upgrade)
Great Value!
Cons:
None so far.
Nice TV
Nice television. Put the (plasma) cell power up a couple of notches and you are ready to go. The included stand seems stable even through California earthquakes! No TV subscriptions, just OTA (Over-the-Air) channels. My OTA HD Tuner is set to 720 (at which most stations broadcast) and the picture is phenominal!
Great Plasma at Great Price
I'm cheap, but I enjoy good quality. In our house, we mostly watch sports, TV over DirecTV, and Netflix movies and TV shows. We are not huge movie buffs. We had put off upgrading to HD for years, but at this price, it finally became the right time to make the leap.
This Samsung has a great picture quality. I have the contrast and brightness low for now to prevent image retention, but it still looks great. We have only owned it for about a week, but no technical problems yet. Others have complained about a buzzing noise, but I can't hear a thing, even at low volume or mute right next to the screen. Plenty of inputs for our uses (DirecTV box, DVD Player, Wii), with 3 HDMI inputs, which is great for future components. I like the glossy black finish.
I researched 720p vs. 1080p pretty thoroughly, and I'm convinced based on the size of the screen (pretty small compared to other sets), and our viewing distance (a pretty small living room), we just aren't going to notice enough difference to pay hundreds of dollars more. Research this on your own, but don't pay for pixels you aren't going to use or appreciate.
Delivery through CEVA was great, and they set up the stand. The screws attaching the base to the screen were a bit tough for the delivery guy to get in (many others have complained about this), but with the proper size screw driver and some elbow grease to prevent stripping the screws, I'd say it only took him about a minute. Maybe we got lucky, or maybe others don't have a good screwdriver, I just know it worked fine for us.
The only downside we have with this TV is that there is a fair amount of glare off the screen depending on the time of day or the lights in the room. We don't have an exceptionally bright room, but the screen is pretty reflective so if you don't have the option to dim the lights or use a curtain on your windows, you may want to consider an LCD. Personally, the glare doesn't bother me all that much, but my wife finds it more distracting, so your experience may vary. It's more noticeable during a darker show or movie (like the West Wing). This is also probably an LCD vs. Plasma difference, and not the fault of this particular unit.
Oh, and the sound is pretty crappy for anything except dialogue on TV shows (music or soundtracks with any kind of bass are a joke), but that is true of just about every plasma or LCD TV. We have a Sony HT-CT100 sound bar on the way that will hopefully solve that problem.
Overall, I'm very happy with this purchase and at around $520 from Amazon, I think it was a great deal. I think we would have had to spend much more to get a noticeably better TV.
A Right Decision !!!! Fantastic HDTV Plasma
This TV is the best option at an incredible price, I have mine for 1 week and have been amazed with the image quality and a good sound, AMAZING COLORS. If you want to put this TV on the wall to keep in mind that the power cord is very short and may have to change it for a longer, at least I did. I'll upload some pictures of my installation.
With DirecTV W/HD Receiver or Bluerays the image is really great !!!
