In the Mattupetti Dam area your will see vistas of water among rolling green hills. You can have a picnic in the area or if you choose you can go horseback riding or go boating if that is what you enjoy. The Mattupetti Dam is about 10 kilometers or about 6.5 miles from the Munnar resorts area.
This Hill Station area of Munnar is at an approximate altitude of 6000 feet. So the area is rich in hills and mountains. Munnar is originally from the Malayalam words moonnu' and aaru' which mean three and river. The Munnar tourist area is joined together by three rivers. These three rivers are Muthirappuzha, Nallathanni and Kundaly. The areas are partly surrounded by dense forest and tea and coffee plantations. It has many trees surrounding it some of which include teak, red sandalwood and jungle jack. There are also many birds that you can watch for in the area.
There is also a bird sanctuary named Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary but it is also known as Thattekad. It is open to the public from 8 am until 6 pm. There is an entry fee plus a charge for cameras and video cameras. There are no vehicles allowed in the sanctuary and it is suggested that you hire a guide to take you around. Some of the birds that you may see are the fairy bluebird, a serpent eagle or a Peninsular Bay Owl. The best time to visit this bird sanctuary is from November to June when the migrating birds arrive.
With so many places to visit the Munnar resorts makes an ideal vacation place. It is an ideal summer destination with very nice weather. The State of Kerala uses as its tourist slogan God's own Country' so from that slogan you can surmise that the surround area is very lovely to visit. In Pothamadu which is approximately 4 miles from Munnar you will see many tea, coffee and cardamom plantations so as you wander along you will be accompanied by some luscious smells. The area is rich in scenery, architectural delights and natural beauty surrounded by rivers, ocean beaches and dense forest.
