reat little player
This little DVD player is just what we needed - inexpensive and easy to set up and use. We just watch 'standard' movies on it (no HD, etc.) and are very satisfied with both the picture and sound quality. It was a snap to set-up, and is super-easy to use... and the price couldn't be better. All in all, an excellent value and we highly recommend it.

Makes better use of an HDTV
Personally, I can't watch watch SD DVD's anymore on my home system without cringing. Even with solid upconversion from my Panasonic BDP or Toshiba HD DVD players, the DVD's just don't cut the mustard. More often than not, however, I end up watching SD DVD's because of availability from Redbox, or TV Series that are only available in the format.
A trip to my folk's house brought me to my dad's 46" RProj Sony Bravia...a nice HDTV. I brought along a couple seasons of Criminal Minds to pass the time. I was horrified to find he hadn't upgraded his 480i to an upconverting DVD player. His PQ at 46" was really bad. I hopped on Amazon shortly after this discovery and ordered him up one of these bargain Magnavox upconverters.
PROS
Simple, one HDMI cable hookup is a plus for my dad, or anyone for that matter.
Easy set-up options from the player's menus are basically set it and forget it.
The PQ has been greatly improved with 1080p upconversion (when my mom, who usually could care less, says she can see a difference, there IS a difference).
Bargain priced.
CONS
No front LCD display on the player, just some BRIGHT LED lights of red and green.
Small remote control that will prove to be difficult for my folks to use.
In conclusion, this is not the upconverting DVD player that I would build a complete HD system around, but it is a cheap solution for someone looking to get more out of their HDTV's PQ.
Upconvert DVD for less
All I have to say why pay the high price for DVD or Blu-Ray player when it is not necessary.
My Aiwa DVD start rolling, so I researched, read reviews and purchased this unit. Glad I did. It took several minutes to tweak and get the correct picture quality for my Hd TV. Boy when I did way better than my Aiwa in its prime. I'm sure Blu Ray is better but for the money who cares, its clear and sharp and I enjoy watching movies on this setup. I purchased a cheap HDMI cable from the Amazon site as well(why pay retail). The picture is more superb(sharper)over that of the s-video or RCA plugs. I would say the only negative would be the onscreen menu.
Great value
I bought a basic SONY for the bedroom. It did not have S-Video or HDMI 'ports.' For a few bucks more, you can get a fine basic DVD player with HDMI upconversion.
I do not have a home theater. I do not own Blu Ray discs (I think one of my new laptops can handle them).So this works very well with my 32 inch SONY LCD TV. One HDMI cable instead of all those stupid old style jacks.
Obviously if you have a more sophisticated system, you're not going to like this player. If you are looking for a nice one for the in-law suite/guest room in your home, this fits the bill.
