This replaced a standard Sony DVD player, the of equal quality [[ASIN:B000EDG6EM Sony DVP-NS55P/S Single Disc DVD Player, Silver] which never failed me. When I got a Samsung Series 5 HDTV, I wanted something that would bring me a better picture on a flat screen than the NS55P, which was geared for standard televisions. The DVP-NS710 was cheap and a Sony, that sold me on it. I've had it for a good while now and I can honestly say this is a top of the line upconversion player. It plays everything I throw at it, from brand new DVDs to the most abused discs obtained from Netflix. I've only had it refuse to play one disc, and that was a Netflix title which had significantly deep scratching. As with my last model, it's nice and quiet, though sometimes there is a bit of a hum when watching the previews on some DVDs. When playing the movie, however, it is dead quiet. The remote is not unlike the one for the NS55P, only smaller and black. Player features are nice, allowing for customization of sound and picture. I highly recommend using a Media Bridge HDMI cable. Quality is high and price is very low.

I was a little surprised in the way it was delivered, no outer box with cushioning, as if I had bought it off the shelf from a stick and brick. So with trepidation I opened it and was relieved that the DVD player was undamaged. It has a sleek minimalist look to it and complements my other Sony products. It is a single player, which suits my needs quite adequately. It plugged in very easily to my Sony amplifier and then came the task of programming it. Make sure you read the directions, it can be a little tricky, wound up with the wrong language-French. I unplugged it and plugged it back in when I couldn't figure out how to redo the language, read the directions as I went and wellah! Yea! it works! I find the picture quality excellent-regular TV-haven't graduated to the HDTV yet, the sound is good, clicker easy to use. My entire surround sound system, amp, TV and DVD player are all Sony so it is easy to integrate and they all match in style. I watch alot of movies, recently watched Avatar and though it was a 2D version it read really great, with an almost 3D feel-but that could be technology of the film itself...Movies and regular TV have good picture quality. It plays my CD's very nicely too. I would recommend this product for ease of use and minimalist sleek design.
Great value for good quality image and sound
This player has great image quality and sound. I replaced a 8 year old Toshiba model that stopped reading discs and am very pleased. I really like the four disc memory feature that pics up where the disc was last stopped. Lots of adjustments for sound and picture size. Easy to configure to any AV set-up. A tad slow on start-up and disc load.
Good up-converting DVD player. Made great gift.
Purchased this for my mother's birthday as we recently bought her an HDTV. Grabbed it from amazon as open box, arrived in perfect shape. Works great. Up-conversion looks very good. Good connections on back and good options in menu. Only gripe is the lack of a eject button on the remote, but not a deal breaker by any means. The unit itself is sleek and stylish. Integrates very well with her TV. Smaller than her older Sony progressive scan DVD player.
No Eject Button? Who Cares?
I purchased this model recently locally as that was the best price I could find. Hook-up was a breeze, playing it was as easy as my old Sony and everything worked as it should.
I saw some complaints in these reviews about no eject button on the remote. I had an eject button on my old remote that I never used, as a matter of fact, I never used the old remote, just operated the player with the remote for my receiver. I think that was merely a reason to not give 5 stars. The old Sony was a straight DVD player and lasted 5+ years (still working, as a matter of fact), hope this one does as good. It's worth the list price, and here you save 10 bucks, makes it even better. I think some of these reviewers make too much of individual components. After all, the component is there to provide a source of entertainment, and if it does that easily, it's worth 5 stars. All the doo-dads and extra wires and other gobble-de-gook don't amount to much if no one understands them. Pop a DVD in, push play and let 'er rip. ENJOY!
Does the job well
No problems, works well. Very simple to connect and operate. Will not play back WMA files, only MP3. No inputs but for the price this is a great unit. It replaces older players that had trouble playing music CD's, or developed annoying freezes in movie DVD's. Have an older version with more features but this one works just as well. TV and receiver are Sony so all the remotes are happy together. Think that I will stay with Sony in the future.
