At risk of sounding completely negative, I will just itemize the entire array of problems I had with this unit. I receive it last night, and immediately all these issue came up. I do hope this was just a defective unit, but I will have to wait until Amazon sends me a replacement in a few days. The issues:

1) SONY IPHONE BLU-RAY REMOTE... if you activate the iPhone remote, the in-the-box original remote stops working. The iPhone remote is pretty, but EXTREMELY limited as to what it can and cannot do. For example, you can't turn the unit off from the iPhone... so when the unit disables the original remote you are pretty much dead in the water after you hit "stop."

2) NETWORK VIDEO WORTHLESS... the reason I got the S570 was to have a more full array of network video than was available on my LG Blu-Ray player. Amazon, Pandora, Netflix, even other services I am not familiar with. However, any time ANY of the network videos played there were two large black boxes that blacked out much of the screen and about a third of the image. They were there even after hard resets of the unit. This was not errant letterboxing bars, this was something in the display that would not toggle off. Also the iPhone remote program would not allow you to toggle displays on and off, and the original remote wasn't working so I could not explore it.

3) SLOW SLOW SLOW... the Sony took over two minutes to start to pre-load "Quantum of Solace" and had to take two attempts to load the "Fame" remake (I know, a horrible movie but a friend wrote it so I was trying to be supportive). The first time failed, telling me "disc error" and the second time took about two minutes before it could play.

4) SETUP... I am very techie, and the setup process with this unit is unbelievably complicated and needlessly complex. No way I would ever give one to a non-techie person as they would never be able to figure it out. Apparently no one at Sony has learned anything from the simplicity of Apple menu hierarchies. It seems they tried to make this as complicated as possible.

5) MICHAEL JACKSON CHANNEL... sadly, the default network video display keeps wanting to send you to the Sony Michael Jackson channel so you can see teases of low-resolution videos and buy the high-rez ones. I don't even want that guy on my TV, but there is no way to get rid of it. If Sony wants to be considered as consumer-friendly company, then they need to stop using their expensive devices to push us into stores for downloads to buy. Let US choose, don't try to trick or force us into your catalog.

6) BACK TO THE REMOTE.... if you leave the until off AND UNPLUGGED for 8 hours or more, the original remote will start to work again but it seems that one minute less than that will still freeze you out. Again, absolutely unacceptable.

7) NETFLIX DEACTIVATION.... after putting my LG player back into place, the Sony now does not allow me to de-activate my Netflix account.

All in all, it took me only about a half-hour to really hate this unit and write Amazon back to return it - which is a record for a Sony product. They are sending me a new one and I do hope this was just a one-off defect, but I have my doubts.

A Good Player

This is the first Blue-Ray player I've purchased and so far I have been pleased with it. I've read some complaints on here about its playing discs being noisy, but I have not had this problem. It plays my DVDs wonderfully and is fairly quiet. I've had few problems streaming from Netflix. There are a few hiccups, like it stopping because of a slowed internet connection. But I think this is more a problem with Netflix, or my internet, and not the player. These are the same problems I get when streaming onto my computer. I've streamed videos from YouTube on here and have had no problems. Set up was easy. I used an HDMI cable to connect it to my TV. The wireless connection is easy too. Just scan for routers and then click on the name of your router when it appears on the screen. If you have it protected with a password, then you will be asked to type it in. After that it should connect with no problem. You will have to do a firmware update before you can play any blue-ray discs. But that is easy enough to do.

I bought this payer to serve as my one in all entertainment source. I can watch my DVDs and stream videos from online with out having to drag my laptop to my TV and hook it up. This has replaced my cable. I would recommend this player to others.

Non-Technical Experience

I had been looking for a Blu ray DVD player for some time. It seemed that when I decided to get Blu ray, everyone raised their prices putting Blu ray out of my budget. Over Memorial Day week end the price was reduced $ 30.00 to $ 218.00 ( No tax or shipping ). I purchased this machine through Amazon but it was executed through One Call. The delivery was incredible, Fed Ex showed up at my door far ahead of when promised.

One of the main purposes for getting this machine or one like it was the built in WiFi. I had no experience with WiFi but wanted it to link up with another computer in the house but mainly to stream Netflix. Set up was a dream. Yes, I did have to go to my computer twice, once to register with Sony Style and once to activate Netflix streaming. Both of these were very easy to do. Setup was a breeze ( remember this is from a non-technical person ). First I updated my Firmware on the Blu ray player. When hooked up to WiFi & internet; this means selecting upgrade, and it does the rest. Wow, that was tough. Then I put in my test Blu ray disc that I purchased ( Avatar ), the video and audio were incredible ( great ).

Next I wanted to try streaming video from Netflix, so I went to my computer again, selected a movie I wanted to watch on Netflix, added it to my instant play list, went back to Blu ray player, selected Netflix and the movie I wanted and it played. Netflix streaming video is not nearly as clear as a Blu ray disc but still excellent, maybe 720p. What was disappointing was Netflix sound, basic shallow stereo. I spoke with Netflix and they told me they were working on Dolby sound and it should be up and running by the end of the year. Meanwhile, this machine plays all my DVD's , including the ones that I have made. I should note that the player loads quite fast as that seems to be a complaint with a number of Blu ray players.

One negative for me that I noticed, the player does not have a repeat feature. Sometimes, when I am watching a DVD I want to see a scene over a number of times in a row, such as a song. You have to rewind for lack of a better word. What else can I say, it's a Sony and Sony puts out a quality product.

Does the job...mostly

I bought this Blu ray player at the same time I purchased Sony's 40EX500 Bravia T.V. I wanted everything to sync up and be compatible. The player is sleek, fast, a bit noisy thru it's functions, and mostly syncs up except when you want to pause the Dvd and resume again. There is anywhere from a 1 to 3 second delay before the voice catches up with the picture. You either have to back it up all the time, or miss some of the dialogue. The issue is with regular dvd's, and not Blu Ray's. Another way around it is to go into the menu and put it on analog/non digital, and it won't have the sync issue, and keep switching it back for other types of viewing..a big inconvenience, and not a great alternative for HD viewing. I pause quite frequently, so this is a real pain. Sony does not seem to have a fix for this problem. Interestingly, this Dvd player does not have this compatibility issue with Sony's earlier models, like the S5100. I tried another brand of Blu Ray player..The Samsung BDC-6500, and it worked perfectly with Sony's EX 500 Bravia T.V. The remote that comes with the Samsung allows you to sync your TV..Problem solved. I hope Sony fixes this, as I think alot of people like to buy within the same brand. In this case, however, doing that comes with the above problem.
