subject: Learn To Play Piano - Two Ways [print this page]

Most of the legendary Classical Music composers worked with the piano. This was true even when, in the case of Bach, he was composing music intended to be played on other instruments. That situation remains largely the same now. As modern composers writing for television and the cinema, continue to compose on the piano.

As well, the piano gives you an option unavailable with most other instruments - the possibility to play chords and melody simultaneously. Thus opening the door to a universe of musical ideas, difficult to create on the guitar, for example. Even though, normally chords are played with the left hand, and melody with the right, with the piano, you have the option of reversing that order.

Basically, two methods of Piano instruction exist. The difficult method. And the easy method. Unfortunately for me, I was taught with the difficult method. Tedious before and after school practice. Mind numbing scales and technical exercises. And an "instructor" who sliced my fingers with a metal edged ruler, whenever I hit a bad note. Absolutely the difficult method!

Fortunately, now there are easier methods. The kind that had not been created when I was an unhappy thirteen year old piano student. The majority of these courses emphasize a joyful, rather than a joyless, boring approach to piano learning; that includes songs you like. The result is that what was agony for me - becomes a pleasure for you.

But it's important to remember that "less difficult" does'nt mean "no work." Don't imagine that overnight you'll master your favorite tune. Instant accomplishment, as all the piano masters will inform you, takes practice. the daily kind.

Regardless of the level of piano mastery you want to acheive, only practice will get you there. But there are two pieces of good news here. Fifteen minutes a day does more for you than three hours once a week. And, following the new encouraging methods, I'm confident you'll be happily going beyond that informal limit!
