Why Let Yourself Be Tempted By Seductive Packages?

Why let yourself be tempted by seductive packages? If you must have snack foods, limit yourself to those you can eat without going crazy. If you can't resist eating an entire bag of peanuts, don't buy one in the first place.

Of course, there is another point of view about snacking. If you decide that you would rather forgo tickets to the next Super Bowl than give up your between-meal snacks, you could find things that are nutritious and not total calorie wasters. This will take a little effort.

The United States Agriculture Department offers you a series of glossy, full-color magazines entitled Food. In these you will find suggestions and recipes for snacks ranging from pickled eggs (only 80 calories each) to beef tacos (270 calories).

I'd go easy on the beef tacos, though, because to my thinking 270 calories starts sounding more like a meal than a snack.

However, if you must snack, you'd be better off eating marinated vegetables (about 75 calories per cup) than hand-dipped chocolates.

Not all dieters will have the patience to prepare snacks from elaborate recipes. All too often we find ourselves wanting a snack "right now" and few will head to the kitchen to start cooking.

Whether you are cooking your snack foods or shopping for them, be sure you make conscious decisions.

One other suggestion about going to the market. Never shop for food when you've just been shopping for other items. You will be tired and might be tempted to "reward" yourself with food because you have been on your feet all day.

Don't keep food around "just in case" someone drops in. If your friends visit you only for the cake and cookies you serve, let them adjust to your new lifestyle. Genuine friends will be supportive of your efforts. And it will give you a chance to begin changing the focus of your socializing from food to people.

Tell your friends they can count on you only for coffee, tea or low calorie beverages. If they need to nibble let them bring along the things they want to eat. And then make sure they take the leftovers home when they leave.

Another word about goodies. (Or should we refer to them as "baddies"?) People who have young children often use the kids as an excuse to stock supplies of Oreo cookies, chocolate bars, caramel popcorn and such junk foods in the pantry. As I discovered from doing this myself, my daughter, Jenny, not only doesn't need the Lorna Doones and Hershey Kisses, she actually prefers fresh fruit. I was the one chomping down most of the empty calories, not Jenny and her friends.

It's interesting to observe Jenny growing up without a house filled with empty calories. She doesn't miss them because most of the time they aren't there. Further, her school has requested that parents not send the kids to school with lunch boxes filled with such items.

Jenny's is not the only school finally getting wise to

the need to provide children with better lunches than have been served in past years. Many communities are making strides towards dumping the empty calorie foods from school cafeterias and bringing in nutritious items.
