Keep Track Of What You Normally Eat!

Don't skip anything!

Be sure to record the time you eat. I'm aware that this exercise, if carried on too long, could become a pain, so let's limit the time span. But do it for at least two days.

Then look at your records. If you have kept them faithfully you should begin to see a pattern. Now keep in mind that the purpose of reproducing a real food record is to make you aware of food. Let's analyze my friend's record and see what we learn.

First, this is a person who enjoys food. Enjoys it enough to cook and vary the menu a great deal. It is also the record of someone who enjoys wine and cocktails. But not especially desserts. My friend eats balanced meals but occasionally nibbles more than desired.

There's a lot that can be modified. (Don't forget this list does not reflect weight-conscious eating. It's simply a record of everything eaten, without thinking about dieting.)

Now the time comes to ask yourself, if this was your food chart, what would you suggest if you wanted to design a reducing plan keeping in mind your food desires and your weight goal?

My recommendations? For one thing, I would simplify the recipes. The more ingredients added to a dish, the more difficult to keep track of the calories. At restaurants I tend to avoid foods when I don't know what goes into their preparation. (At home you can keep track, but nevertheless, elaborate combinations can easily add up to more calories than you might really want to eat.)

Next, I would suggest that my friend cut down on alcohol. Not only does alcohol add huge numbers of calories, but it can stimulate the appetite so that you lose control over eating. (It could be the reason the Fritos were eaten.)

Note that I didn't suggest cutting out the booze altogether. Chances are that would produce a feeling of deprivation which might drive one further into eating. Just cut down.

Becoming aware of what you eat is a giant step in changing your eating behavior. Only when you are aware can you modify. If you never become aware, you'll continue the same patterns that caused the problem.
