The Top Four Ways to Be the Silverback Gorilla

If you would like to see the epitome of classic alpha behavior, just click on your TV and watch an animal program featuring a family of gorillas.

As you watch the program, you will notice huge muscular gorillas running around, ripping down tree branches. They thump their chests and yell so all will know they are fierce gorillas. But, just as with humans, these boisterous bucks are not the gorillas running the show. To spot the true leader, look for the gorilla not trying to prove it. Seek out the one with well-honed senses, astutely keeping watch over the entire troop. He is the center of the other gorilla's attention, serving as the community conscience; he is the police, judge and jury, having seen all and adjudicating the outcome of disputes. He decides the troop's agenda for the day and forever. He is the Silverback Gorilla and he is in charge. No amount of screeching or chest thumping will change that.

Top four ways to be the Silverback Gorilla:

1. Violent encounters mandate that you become, like the Silverback, a warrior who does not accept defeat. Make sure you have this checked off of your list for training - Whenever you go for your self defense training, go into it with a warriors mindset. This means you must train with intensity!

2. When you go through a mock attack (a must in quality self defense training) employ the mindset that you are really being attacked. This will allow you to download a trained response onto your hard-drive for future use. So if the worst case scenario happens, you are prepared.

3. Once you determine someone is an aggressor, you must preemptively strike to control the outcome. The aggressor always presents biological giveaways such as clinched jaw, clinched fist, overall body posture, closing of distance, or verbal aggression before an attack. Once you identify these signals, you unleash with a barrage of debilitating strikes.

4. A must in self defense training - A violent attack must be met with a violent response greater than what was delivered by the attacker. A moderate response will not suffice. This will ensure that your attacker knows you have a "do not go gently" policy and in fact, you have turned the tables and you are now the aggressor. This is psychologically defeating for the attacker.

Train in an intelligent manner. Be the Silverback Gorilla.
